From the Publisher
Matam Press began in Tucson, Arizona on March 1, 1999 as a publishing house whose central concern is to present alternative views and discourse on familiar and sometimes rare topics. This is the first publishing house to include a focus on the Dark Goddess and Her global legacy. It all started when I could not find a certain book with a certain perspective on a certain subject, thus began an amazing journey to exploring forms in mythology, art, science and literature. Matam Press attempts to fill in a gap that is conspicuous among books published, creating books on unique subjects and perspectives that are rare but illuminating. You won't find the monotonous selection of titles here at Matam Press and that is one remarkable thing.

The First Book of the Dark Goddess (second edition) by Matomah Alesha is now available. This latest edition has more extended content, better presentation and more images.

From the Author
The story of the Dark Goddess is not the story of African people alone. The story of Africa is a story that includes all humanity. For all humanity emerges from the great African ancestral mother, she is the source of our mitochrondial DNA. She is thought to be the oldest human ancestor but more is being uncovered as we speak and the years could be pushed back even further. African culture produced the seeds for all cultures on this earth. The genre of the African Goddess is very limited and in some cases non-existent. This is unfortunate given how pivotal the first mother was to the survival and perpetration of humanity. Like all mothers today, its not something we can take for granted for we contribute great to the psychic and emotional foundation of human community. This book is an attempt to provide a resource for readers who have an interest in the subject matter. And for those who have never thought of a Dark Goddess then this book is one good introduction to a cultural history and perspective that was at one time quite universal before the introduction of drastic environmental and cultural changes. Many people still carry on, sometimes in secret honoring a Dark Goddess in one form or the other. For them, this book will confirm what they believe and suspected for years, the important role the Dark goddess plays in spirituality, healing and the sustaining of healthy community.

'A Masterpiece, Masterfully Created'.

First and foremost I Praise, Thank and Salute the DIVINE FEMININE in ALL her Aspects.

Second, I salute and thank Goddess Matomah Alesha for putting her Soul, Love and Time into this project. "The First Book of the Dark Goddess" (second edition) is an Outstanding, Exemplary Book... well Researched and Composed.

Third, this Book has helped me to Tune into and to Unlock from within me different Aspects of the Dark Goddess. This has been a Wonderful Experience for me... to Realize my 'True Self'. And I look forward to continuing on this journey of discovering the Real Black Woman... who I BE!!!

(Note: 'who I BE' is not incorrect grammer for ME... it states what I mean, & '...' does not indicate omission of words.)

Lastly, I thank you for taking the time to read my review of this Great Literature.

Sincerely,

Loria O'Solomon

There are NO WORDS to describe this book. I wish it was not as Rare as it is. This should be REQUIRED READING FOR WOMAN and MEN ALL OVER. I can not thank you enough for investing your time, energy and research abilities to this project. If you want a detailed history of OUR MOTHER: The Dark Goddess, then it is well worth the investment. This is the only book of its kind and no doubt there will not be another like it. Again I say THANK YOU!

First of Its Kind
By NeuTown
There are many books on Goddesses from around the world, but very few writers and researchers have done much work on black Goddesses from Africa, Asia and Southern Europe. Matomah Alesha is an American with an interest in native culture, ancient mythology and Goddess folklore and her book is written with a passion to tell the story of the first African Mother-Goddess and her manifestations in other cultures and places. Matomah Alesha is a poet and artist as well as a researcher, so her book is full of ideas and enthusiasms as much as information and facts, and she weaves a spiraling story of black Goddesses of creation, fertility, love, earth and elemental powers, drawn from a wide range of material, including native customs and belief systems, and modern science and genetics. Along the way she looks at the role of women in African society, the evidence for matrilineal cultures, and the significance of blackness. The book is thus something of a helter-skelter ride, but always rooted in her love for the Great Mother Goddess and Her significance for people all over the world. This book is not easy to obtain, but its worth the effort for the amount of diverse material it contains and its originality. My review copy had no illustrations, but the book itself does include quite a number, which are doubtless very worth having.
