About the Author

Anand Halve is the co-founder and Director of chlorophyll brand & communications consultancy, Mumbai, India. Prior to this, he was on the Board of Enterprise Nexus Communications, and has worked at Lowe Lintas and Rediffusion. He did his MBA from Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, India, in 1977. He has also been a visiting faculty at Mudra Institute of Communications, Ahmedabad and IIM, Ahmedabad, for several years.

At chlorophyll, he has been instrumental in the development of copyrighted branding models and brand development processes. His experience as an entrepreneur has been featured as one of the case studies in Rashmi Bansal’s bestseller, Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish, which published by IIM, Ahmedabad in 2008. Halve also contributes to various online and print media, including Hindustan Times, Campaign India magazine, afaqs.com and exchange4media.com.

Halve is the author of Planning for Power Advertising: A User’s Manual for Students and Practitioners (2005).

A lovely compilation of Indian brands

(I bought this book in India, from Flipkart. While it's a great book, the $37 Amazon price is ridiculous.)

With plenty of international brand case studies, what was really missing was a study on Indian brands. This is a good showcase by one of the leading writers in the space.

Thoroughly enjoyable with plenty of little 'stories' (especially the one on how Taste The Thunder came about or how Verghese Kurien stuck behind Da Cunha Communications), it tracks stories of iconic Indian brands like Thums Up, Hero, AirTel, Maruti and many more.

Probably a must-read if you're in the marketing-advertising space in India, a very decent read even otherwise.

Only downsides? The last few brands (Femina, Airtel) seemed a little rush to me, there weren't as many 'stories' or themes of adaptability as in the case of the previous brands, and they somehow seemed to me to be a bit of a 'filler'.

I'd have also loved to see some 'less obvious' brands, perhaps a Bisleri, and perhaps a small section on Indian brands that have failed (Onida Candy, the killing of Kelvinator, etc). That would have probably made the book complete and provided a complete learning. But perhaps, that's something that Halve has in store for us in Part 2.

An excerpt from this book, about African-American characters, was used January 31, 2,000 in a state-wide Illinois third-grade reading standards test. 70,000 Illinois children got this test excerpt, in which the testers reillustrated the story without permission and changed the characters to Causcasians. I wrote the book with great care, and with the hope that many children will identify with my characters who are courageous and successful and well-liked. Over 200,000 copies of the book have been sold. I know from my fan mail that many children of all races do identify with the characters. It must have been painful for many of them to see their heroes turned white on a test--and for others who know the book, it must have been distracting at the least. One of the testers' three new illustrations shows the brothers in the story playing baseball. Eight books about the characters have been published to date (there will be a new one next year)--and in none of them do the characters play baseball. The testers developed their test questions based on a 3-page excerpt from the book; they had never even seen a copy of the entire book (thus the error in race), much less read it. It's quite possible that a child who had read the book would give different answers to the test questions based on his knowledge, and that the testers, in their ignorance, would mark it wrong. In many states, statewide tests are very serious these days--children are stigmatized for low scores, and teachers lose their jobs. But it appears that the tests are hastily and thoughtlessly constructed and penalize good readers. Parents and all of us concerned with education need to know what kind of tests children are being subjected to. --anncameron@guate.net

Excellent book. I read it over and over again

After reading the first story about the father and the lemon pudding, i just had to try some lemon pudding and now it is my favorite. All the stories are great and very interesting. I liked how Julian had such a creative imagination. I'm 11 years old and I still love to read it.

This is one to read aloud, again and again.

One of my all-time favorite read-aloud books, with lively,
expressive illustrations. This book and its sequel -
More Stories Julian Tells - describes the trials and
tribulations of our hero, the ever-inventive Julian.
The author, Ann Cameron, lovingly shows how Julian's
curiosity and voracious desire to learn get him in and
out of all kinds of scrapes. For example, the unforgettable
story of how Julian convinces his little brother, Huey, to
taste a pudding made for their mother. Taste they do, that
fabled pudding, which according to both mom and dad, tastes
"like a whole raft of lemons, like a night on the sea." And
they keep on tasting 'til the pudding is gone. The punishment
leveled by their father - a "beating" and a "whipping" of
a new pudding - is both tender and just. Cameron's creative
use of language and the way she repeats key phrases, make
each story memorable and a pleasure to read aloud. You
won't be surprised when you hear your audience chiming in
with you!

Historical Genius

This is going to be short and sweet. The book is excellent for research. It gives you a history of the events that occurred throughout the time period of 1584 - 1775 and then includes primary documents. There are many different perspectives from one document to another. If you're interested in history or are doing research on a particular subject in this era, I would recommend this book to you.

The Fault is My Own

This book is important, but dry - and I did my best, ( I find my "best" keeps changing so who knows for later) but I couldn't wade through it right now with any degree of mental stimulation from the authors - which was too bad, too as it dealt with the original documents and words of the participants at the time (which may have been part of problem). It reminds me of why I didn't like history when I was in school, and is the reason I'm going back now - at this point in time - to round out what I missed out of boredom then (and immaturity) to try to ferret out some better historians with a more flavorful flair for turning their writing talents loose. Nonetheless, I clearly see it's value; I know it is worthy of any serious historian, and the fault is my own. I encourage anyone who has thought about going back and refreshing American History to jump off and go for it. It's amazing. But if you go *here* to do it, be forewarned that it is very dated in it's writing format, and the same history can be found elsewhere in livelier form. It certainly wasn't dull while it was happening, and it shouldn't be tedious to read of it now.

There was one chapter (pg 186) that caught my attention - "Adam Smith, conclusion of the mercantile system". This man offered a no-nonsense approach to addressing the existing disparities in the "import/export" and therefore the "supply/demand" while establishing a vigorous American economy free from British interference. I hadn't read too much about him before. He could see an "imbalance" of trade and he could see the reason why: the colonists themselves were being used as cheap labor to produce for exportation, while "tools of the trade" that would allow expansion of talents were all but impossible to import, to effectively suppress competition from the colonists - as they would gain greater strength and skills from such purchases by manufacturers that had already fine-tuned some of the processes, thereby becoming a strong, independent nation and thereby also an inherent threat to the Motherland.

It's a very good book for scholars, but I didn't have the strength or patience at this point to digest all of it - although I probably will go back later and "take it on."

These aren't really art mysteries. What did Jesus look like? Where is the Ark of the Covenant? Who invented oil painting? What about Van Gogh's ear? Was Caravaggio assassinated?

The concept for this book is contrived -- these aren't interesting mysteries. And then we get such paltry glimpses of the artwork in question, little photographs instead of two-page spreads, that the book does not even make for a good art book.

Why?

That is the real mystery.

A mistake?

While this book is very interesting and piques the curiosity of the reader, I question the information regarding Goya's The Family of Charles IV. The author attributes the missing face of the female figure to the deceased daughter of Charles, Maria Amalia. Many art historians attribute the missing facial features to the fact that the figure actually represented the future not-yet-chosen wife of Prince Ferdinand.

Ophthalmology Made Ridiculously Simple (Medmaster Ridiculously Simple)

I am an retired ophthalmologist who spends part of the year supervising medical students in Australia. I deliver a number of lectures under the title of Undergraduate Ophthalmology. Drs Goldberg and Trattler's little book is an admirable resource for both me and the students I teach. For undergraduates, eye diseases are regarded as tiger country and this little book most certainly provides a splendid guide through the ocular jungle.
Highly recommended.

I work in an urgent care office and wanted a good eye reference book. This book is simple like it says but it is a little too simple and has not been a good reference book. I have since bought the Will's Eye Manual and love it.

Ridiculously Simple

As it states on the cover of the book, "All the ophthalmology necessary for the non-ophthalmologists." Great introductory book for those without any exposure to ophthalmology. It is not enough practical information for medical students to impress anybody on an ophthalmology rotation beyond the first couple of days and certainly not enough to confidently work up all but the most obvious findings on your own.

In conclusion, great book for brief and succinct introduction to ophthalmology. Disagree with a prior review, poor book for ophthalmology rotation.
