Absolutely worth reading!

Having read many, many books regarding this subject, I have to confess I went into this one prepared to be disappointed. Boy, was I in for a big surprise!

This book is awesome in every respect. It blends channeling experience masterfully with the past life regression seemlessly and flawlessly. I hung on every word, and could completely identify with the author, his friends and the subject matter, barely able to put it down.

The printing and craftmanship of the book is a little bit odd, but after the first page I hardly noticed. I love the format and the way the author set up his story, which is compelling and authentic. Worthy of many more than 5 stars. If you want to get down to the nitty gritty of past life regression and channeling, then this book won't disappoint. I promise.

About the Author
Angie Hofmann has a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry from the University of California, Irvine. While working as a postdoctoral fellow, Angie Hofmann started editing papers. Since then, she has served as an editor on numerous publications. After her postdoctoral time, she started her career as a freelance editor and adjunct instructor. For the past eight years she has been an adjunct instructor at various universities and institutes worldwide, such as the Max-Planck-Institute (Germany), the Fritz-Haber Institute (Germany), Humboldt University (Germany), University of Carabobo (Venezuela), University of Massachusetts, and Yale University. She wrote the manual on "Scientific Writing" for biological and biomedical scientists as a teaching and reference guide.

Comprehensive resource, from theory to application

This book was required reading for my biochemistry writing seminar, and it turned out to be an excellent investment.

The material covered is comprehensive, starting with basic principles of style and composition (effective words, sentences, paragraphs) and leading to guidelines for specific sections of a manuscript, poster, or grant. It is truly a standalone resource.

The explanations are straightforward and engaging - and, importantly, they are supplemented with MANY before-and-after examples. How to pare down sentences, how to rearrange a confusing introduction to make it compelling, how to design effective figures, etc. These before- and after-revision examples really help a writer learn to recognize, analyze, and revise flawed passages in their own writing. And if that wasn't effective enough: at chapters' end, problems are provided for you to exercise the chapter's concepts.

Beyond the essentials, the book includes strategies for drafting a manuscript (that save time and energy), and even checklists to help you evaluate your drafts. I personally loved the "Word Location" section, which neatly showed how word placement can subtly change sentence emphasis, which can make a BIG difference in guiding a reader's attention through complex material.

There are many insights in each chapter - tips you might receive from veteran post-docs, but here, compiled into one well-organized reference. Highly recommended for every lab!

THE best book on scientific writing

I have taught technical writing to graduate students in applied ecology for nearly 20 years. During that time I have evaluated many textbooks and adopted 4 of them. This book is flat-out the best. If I ever change textbooks, it will be for Hofmann's next edition. I especially appreciate how well the text explains "mechanical" topics like word choice, and how to construct clear and persuasive sentences, paragraphs, and papers. It provides excellent before-and-after examples. Although I'm a good writer (having authored about 70 scientific papers), this book taught me new things and helped me improve my writing. At $25, it is one of the best investments a scientist can make.

Great resource for academic scientist in the life sciences

This book describes everything scientists need to know about scientific writing and editing. Given its breath and depth, it is a useful addition to the library of both new graduate students working on their first poster or seasoned professors looking to improve their chances of receiving their next RO1 grants.

The scientific background of the author is evident through this book; it is really well structured and provides many well-chosen examples only a former scientist could provide. Exercises throughout the book give a welcome opportunity for the reader to put theory into practice.

Overall, a bargain and good read for scientists eager to improve their prose. As mention in 2 former reviews, a bias toward life sciences exists in the book. However, "Scientific Writing and Communication: Papers, Proposals, and Presentations" would be useful to a broad range of scientists, from physicists to engineers.

Worth Reading

In 1913, women were expected to wear smotheringly hot full length dresses in order to be considered decent. Most women did not work outside of the home, being expected to be happy in their role as wife and mother. In most of the world, women didn't even have the right to vote. Surely any marital advice given at this time would seem incredibly outdated or, at the very least, charmingly quaint, in the year 2011? It was with this attitude that I first opened the pages of Don'ts for Wives by Blanche Ebbutt. It did not take me long to realise just how wrong I was. While some of the tips are no longer relevant to the average reader - those having to do with how to deal with servants, for example - much of the wisdom within this volume is as relevant today as it was then. I found myself taking note of many pieces of advice, with the intention of attempting to remedy my behaviour within my own marriage.

Much chastened, I moved onto 'Don'ts for Husbands' with a more open mind. Once again, I was surprised at how relevant much of Ms Ebbutt's advice is to today's relationships and the progressiveness of some of the points, considering the era in which the book was written.

It is a shame that these books have been so unknown for so long, as I feel that the advice in them is more relevant to a newly married couple than a dozen books of the Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus: The Classic Guide to Understanding the Opposite Sex persuasion. I would venture to go so far as to state that a copy of each of these books should be given to the happy couple as a wedding present (or perhaps a housewarming gift for those in less formal arrangements). Certainly anybody in a permanent relationship should consider reading them. You will be surprised at just how much you are doing wrong.

Timeless advice!

The pair of little books "Dont's for Wives/Dont's for Husbands" sheds an amazing light into the common sense approach to marriage that has worked through the ages. My husband and I got a kick out of them. Written in 1913, before Women's Sufferage had brought women the right to vote in some areas, the advice is remarkably well balanced and I'd say rivals Dr. Laura's in the areas of courtesy bringing bliss! Patience is a theme, as is compromise, appreciation of each other's differences in opinion, turning off your ego, and realistic statements about love not being bought, and making sure you stay on the same "team" with your spouse.

Buy these books as a pair, the differences are also entertaining. Only the "Wives" version has a chapter on "Avoiding Discord"! The author aptly states, "Takes two to quarrel, don't be one of them!"

interesting...

This is a tiny book, maybe 3" x 5". It's interesting from a social/cultural studies point of view. Some of the advice is still good...some things never change...and the rest is still good to read ( such as, don't flick your ashes on the drawing room carpet ). After I got my copy of this book, and the "Don'ts for Wives", I ordered multiple copies of each, and I plan to order more.

1000 years later, buddhism had degenerated into philosophical nihilism. Adi Shankara defeated the buddhist nihilists and Dharma was again restored.

If you like or love radio, you must read this book !

Although the much of the commercial radio industry is dying, especially in major markets, the rise of community-based Low-Power FMs offer civic-minded citizens and would-be broadcasters an opportunity to provide a soap-box to like-minded listeners, especially under-served segments of a community's population. While the book tends to be a bit toward the outrageous, the enthusiasm the author has for a time that was once common-place offers a portrait of the give-and-take that goes on every day of a vibrant radio station.

The Bible for the LPFM Revolution

As of early 2000, the FCC has begun the process of approving a new class of broadcasting, low-power FM (LPFM). The thrust of this effort -- just like the thrust of Milam's book -- is to bring new voices and issues to airwaves.
Milam was one of the early pioneers in radical, non-profit broadcasting. He formed the KRAB Nebula of stations that competed with Pacifica for the far left of public radio. Sex and Broadcasting gives an overview of what it takes (or at least what it took in the '60s and '70s -- the technology and regulation of radio have changed significantly since the book was published) to start up a station and to give it reason.
Milam contents that broadcasting, like sex, requires passion and devotion. At times the book reads like a Yippie manifesto, but when Milam starts talking about the power of radio, one cannot help but be swayed.
Whether or not LPFM takes off the ground (Congressional efforts are seeking to limit/block its introduction) remains to be seen, however the lessons of Sex and Broadcasting could easily be applied as easily and effectively by a webcaster as a traditional over-the-air broadcaster.

About the Author
Philip J. Adler taught college courses in world history to undergraduates for almost thirty years prior to his recent retirement. Dr. Adler earned his Ph.D. at the University of Vienna following military service overseas in the 1950s. His dissertation was on the activity of the South Slav emigres during World War I, and his academic specialty was the modern history of Eastern Europe and the Austro-Hungarian empire. His research has been supported by Fulbright and the National Endowment for the Humanities grants. Adler has published widely in the historical journals of the U.S. and German-speaking Europe. He is currently professor emeritus at East Carolina University, where he spent most of his teaching career.

Randall L. Pouwels earned his B.A. in history at the University of Wisconsin and his Ph.D. in history at UCLA. His Ph.D. dissertation was on the history of Islam in East Africa. His book, HORN AND CRESCENT: CULTURAL CHANGE AND TRADITIONAL ISLAM ON THE EAST AFRICAN COAST, 800-1900 (Cambridge, 1987), has become a standard work in African history. THE HISTORY OF ISLAM IN AFRICA (Athens, Oxford, and Cape Town, 2000) was jointly edited with Nehemia Levtzion of Hebrew University, Jerusalem. Widely praised in reviews, it was selected by Choice as an Outstanding Academic Title for 2001 and was made a selection of the History Book Club. In addition, he has written numerous articles and reviews on East African history, the history of Islam in Africa, and historical methodologies. His other research interests include the history of the Middle East, the Indian Ocean, and the history and archaeology of Native Americans. Over the years, his work has been supported by grants and fellowships from Fulbright-Hays, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Social Studies Research Council, the National Geographic Society, and the American Philosophical Society. He has taught African history for over twenty years at LaTrobe University in Melbourne, Australia, and at UCLA. He has been the Professor of African and Middle Eastern History at the University of Central Arkansas since 1984.

Good book, good class, terrible teacher

Normally, I am really fascinated with World History, and this book did have some fascinating chapters. It really was the one thing keeping me awake and alive during my history class when I had a dinosaur for a teacher and I couldn't understand anything he said. I made it through the class because I basically read this book from start to finish. So this book helped guide me through it, even when the teacher was super boring.

Fast Deliverly. Good condition.

My textbook arrived within three days of purchasing it! Very happy about that! My only complaint was there were a few coffee stains on the first three pages, and the front cover's bottom left hand corner was bent which is really no big deal because all of the important pages are not damaged.

PRIVATE LESSONS WITH BRUCE LEE!

I've just finished reading "Bruce Lee: Artist ofLife" -- what a book! It was just like having a private lessonwith Bruce Lee on a host of different topics! I enjoyed spending time with him as he discoursed on gung fu and Chinese culture; then attending philosophy classes with him at the University of Washington; moving from there on to the study of the mind as he explored the Gestalt approach to psychology; and then listening to him wax poetic about life, longing and lovers separated by fate; then it was a journey into the inner recesses of the soul to learn about "personal liberation" through JKD; his views on acting followed, revealing how he applied all of the foregoing into his films, and then, finally, his profoundly personal essays "In My Own Process" allowed Bruce to share with me his views on the process of his life. Again, what a magnificent book and what an incredible human being it reveals. This is my favorite volume in The Bruce Lee Library Series and I, for one, quite enjoy the breadth and scope of this volume. If you're interested just in JKD -- read volume three in this series; if you're interested in just gung fu -- read volume two (both are devoted exclusively to these respective modes of combat); if you want more of Bruce Lee's private letters -- you will enjoy volume five. But if you're looking for a great anthology of Bruce Lee's most important writings, you HAVE to read this book! It's the only book that covers all the bases in the totality of Bruce Lee's interests and beliefs. A great read.

INCREDIBLE NEW INFORMATION ON BRUCE LEE

I had to wait six weeks for the Barnes and Noble store in my area to restock "Bruce Lee: Artist of Life" -- but it was well worth the wait! This is the greatest Bruce Lee book I've ever seen! Not only is there new, never-before-published material in almost every section, but Mr. Little has done Bruce Lee a great service by reproducing some of the writings that had been published previously (both in the Tao of Jeet Kune Do and in the Bruce Lee Library Series) in the original format that Bruce Lee first wrote them. I particularly enjoyed the never-before-published drafts of Bruce's great essay "Jeet Kune Do: Toward Personal Liberation." There are new and subtle differences in each version of the famous essay as Bruce works it over with each draft. I understand that this represents "the essential writings" of Bruce Lee, that is, a representative anthology of Bruce's writings in many different areas. It certainly is "essential" -- it's the best Bruce Lee book I've ever read and essential for anyone who wishes a full and complete understanding of the totality of the man. If you are looking for a book that is both a great introduction to the phenomenon that is Bruce Lee as well as a book that will inspire you to fully actualize yourself...this is the book you've been waiting for!

OUTSTANDING!

BRUCE LEE: ARTIST OF LIFE is unquestionably the greatest Bruce Lee book (in the sense of being a pure Bruce Lee book) ever written. John Little has done a masterful job of compiling and editing an absolutely huge amount of materials into a unified and coherent whole. The book also reveals something I've felt for a long time but, until now, have lacked the evidence to prove; namely, that Bruce Lee was much more than a martial artist. While Chuck Norris and Van Damme continue to play schoolyard games of "who's the toughest?" (Norris, particularly is still at this level), it is obvious that Bruce Lee had long ago moved past this stage and was onto something far deeper and more meaningful with his "process of becoming," having transcended the martial art realm (poetry, psychology, philosophy, etc.)and becoming, ultimately, an "artist of life." This is an outstanding book by an outstanding man and is extremely motivational and inspiring. Which is something few books (and authors) can deliver in a man's lifetime.
