Aquinas's Ontology of the Material World: Change, Hylomorphism, and Material Objects, by Jeffrey E. Brower

What is the nature of the material world? And how are its fundamental constituents to be described? These questions are of central concern to contemporary philosophers, and in their attempt to answer them, they have begun reconsidering traditional views about metaphysical structure, including the Aristotelian view that material objects are best described as 'hylomorphic compounds'--that is, objects composed of both matter (hyle) and form (morphe).
In this major new study, Jeffrey E. Brower presents and explains the hylomorphic conception of the material world developed by Thomas Aquinas, the most influential Aristotelian of the Middle Ages. According to Brower, the key to understanding Aquinas's conception lies in his distinctive account of intrinsic change. Beginning with a novel analysis of this account, Brower systematically introduces all the elements of Aquinas's hylomorphism, showing how they apply to material objects in general and human beings in particular. The resulting picture not only sheds new light on Aquinas's ontology as a whole, but provides a wholesale alternative to the standard contemporary accounts of material objects.

In addition to presenting and explaining Aquinas's views, Brower seeks wherever possible to bring them into dialogue with the best recent literature on related topics. Along the way, he highlights the contribution that Aquinas's views make to a host of contemporary metaphysical debates, including the nature of change, composition, material constitution, the ontology of stuff vs. things, the proper analysis of ordinary objects, the truthmakers for essential vs. accidental predication, and the metaphysics of property possession.

Review

"...a welcome addition to research on Aquinas's metaphysics and a fresh start for studies on his physics. This pondered and engaging monograph, whose reading is well recommended to both scholars and students, will certainly become a reference for future studies on Aquinas's ontology of the material world." -- Journal of the History of Philosophy

"...this is a careful, well-argued book. Whether or not one agrees with Brower's interpretations of Aquinas, anyone interested in Aquinas's ontology of the material world will need to take Brower's book into account. And for any medievalist interested in learning the contemporary metaphysical landscape, or any metaphysician interested in understanding medieval metaphysics, I can think of no better bridge to employ than this book." -- American Catholic Philosophical Quarterly

The Battle of Bretton Woods: John Maynard Keynes, Harry Dexter White, and the Making of a New World Order, by Benn Steil

When turmoil strikes world monetary and financial markets, leaders invariably call for "a new Bretton Woods" to prevent catastrophic economic disorder and defuse political conflict. The name of the remote New Hampshire town where representatives of 44 nations gathered in July 1944, in the midst of the century's second great war, has become shorthand for enlightened globalization. The actual story surrounding the historic Bretton Woods accords, however, is full of startling drama, intrigue, and rivalry, which are vividly brought to life in Benn Steil's epic account.

Upending the conventional wisdom that Bretton Woods was the product of an amiable Anglo-American collaboration, Steil shows that it was in reality part of a much more ambitious geopolitical agenda hatched within President Franklin D. Roosevelt's Treasury and aimed at eliminating Britain as an economic and political rival. At the heart of the drama were the antipodal characters of John Maynard Keynes, the renowned and revolutionary British economist, and Harry Dexter White, the dogged, self-made American technocrat. Bringing to bear new and striking archival evidence, Steil offers the most compelling portrait yet of the complex and controversial figure of White - the architect of the dollar's privileged place in the Bretton Woods monetary system, who also, very privately, admired Soviet economic planning and engaged in clandestine communications with Soviet intelligence officials and agents over many years.

A remarkably deft work of storytelling that reveals how the blueprint for the postwar economic order was actually drawn, The Battle of Bretton Woods is destined to become a classic of economic and political history.

Good historical background but requires understanding of Econ
By Finhead
A solid historical background of the Bretton Woods agreement with colorful anecdotes describing the often acrimonious debate between the UK and US governments on the terms. In addition, Steil gives an inside look into the genius of Keynes and the political savvy of Harry White. The book is heavy on Macro-Econ principles which means you'll want at least a beginner's understanding of gold standards, currency manipulation, international trade strategies, and deficit spending.

Masterful, authoritative, and insightful
By Antonio Andrade
In 1944 delegates from 44 countries convened at the Mount Washington Hotel in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire. The topic of discussion was the post-World War II international financial system. In this book Benn Steil tells the story of what transpired at that meeting; he explains how the main characters interacted with each other, and how a rather obscure American civil servant was able to have his plan for the global financial architecture approved. This book masterfully tells the story of the “war of ideas” between Harry Dexter White and John Maynard Keynes, arguably the most famous economist of the 20th century. The style is lucid, the prose is elegant, and the attention to details is superb. A distant mirror of our current problems
By Manuel Hinds
The title of this excellent book accurately describes its contents:it is about a battle fought to define a new world order, that which was emerging from the ashes of World War II. The book also conveys the messy complexity of such a historical process--how individual characters interpreted the events around them, realized that they were giving shape to a radically new future, tried to take advantage of them to advance their own personal and national interests, and succeeded in accordance with their intelligence, the cunning of their argumentation, and, above all, the shifts in the real power that supported them. Masterly, Benn Steil makes the reader feel how Keynes and White gradually reached an unspoken and unrecognized agreement regarding the shape that the new world would have, and then fought to gain advantage in that new world--Keynes trying to keep the British Empire paramount in the world order, now based not on the Royal Navy but on Britain's alliance with the United States, the emerging superpower, and White asserting the unimpeded power of the United States. Focusing on one crucial aspect of the new order, money, Steil is able to reenact the human drama of the transfer of world power from Britain to the United States in all orders of life. It is an excellent history book.

The book, however, goes beyond history as the narration and understanding of past events. When reading it, there is an eerie feeling that you are reading about current events. The process that led to Bretton Woods started thirty years before, with World War I and the end of the classical gold standard. When the war ended, a new monetary system was created, which was called the gold exchange standard. It resembled but emasculated the power of the old gold standard to keep monetary order in the world at large. This new system gave central banks the power to create money independently of the international consequences of doing it. With time, central banks abused this power, created a boom in the 1920s and then a depression in the 1930s. Bretton Woods was convened to reintroduce order in the monetary world. Like the gold standard of old, the new system created there was tied to gold in an effort to ensure stability. Yet, it also allowed central banks freedom to create money under certain circumstances. As it happened in the 1920s and 1930s, central banks abused their power, blew up the international system (in this case the Bretton Woods system) and then led the world into a series of booms and busts that has not ended as yet. A new monetary order will be needed to avoid worldwide inflation and protracted recessions. To understand the issues that will be crucial to give shape to this new monetary order it will be necessary to revisit the making of Bretton Woods in detail. There is no better way to understand these issues that Ben Steil's The Battle of Bretton Woods. Thus, in addition to being an excellent history book, it is also an excellent book about current events.

Full disclosure: I wrote a previous book with Benn Steil: Money, Markets and Sovereignty (Yale University Press, 2009).

Why Are So Many Jews Millionaires?

Jews are estimated to make up less than 1% of the world's population, yet approximately 25% of the world's billionaires are Jewish. Jews are always found on lists of the world’s richest people. In 2009, 139 of the Forbes 400 were Jewish. Jews also comprise a very large number of history’s most important figures, people who have had a profound impact on humanity. Approximately 35% of Nobel Prizes have been awarded to Jews. No other ethnic group has even come close to matching the abilities and accomplishments of Jews.

Since such a large percent of the wealthiest and most successful people in the world are Jewish, a common question the world over is, “Why are so many Jews so wealthy?” Their secret lies not in their genetics or intelligence, as some have believed, but in their religion. Many of the wealthiest Jews use a code based on Judaism.

You do not need to convert to Judaism or believe in religion to use The Money Code. “Religion has preserved history's greatest wisdom teachings,” says religious studies scholar Huston Cummings Smith.

There are various methods of wealth creation; however, many are short-lived, unfulfilling, or hazardous. The ideal circumstance is to create long-lasting wealth, accompanied by peace of mind and fulfilment. This book will reveal the code that many Jews understand and use to their great advantage. The Money Code can be used by absolutely anyone to achieve long-term wealth and success in life.

Wish I'd read this book thirty years ago!
By Mamabear Cherei
There are some bits of knowledge that one wishes they knew many decades earlier. This is the type of book that should actually be required reading in high school and college Economic classes.

This book is outlined so well from start to finish. It literally lays out a very precise plan for one to follow. I like that the author included several links if the reader wishes to learn much more about various subjects. (From investing to which field of work one should pursue).

It's never to late to start down the path of changing one's fiscal habits to better your life. Perhaps you're like me.. and didn't grow up with a father to teach you the basics of economics. And, a single mother who couldn't.. because she was just as clueless about how to make your money work for you. This book will teach you much about money that just isn't as readily known around the world.

Complete Resource Guide for Wealth Creation
By JMAuthor
This has to be one of the most comprehensive books I have read on making money. Not full of fluff and hype! Rather, this book gives you not only references to factual wisdoms about making money, as well as practical steps to implement. The author also breaks it down step by step for the reader so that they know how to think, how to produce a high income business or career, how and where to invest, the truths of universal laws, as well as traditional Jewish methods of wealth creation.

Not just for the religious, and certainly not just for the Jewish, this book gives anyone a shot at the wealth that is out there to be had. Like most books, it is easier read than applied, but the resources and "Take Action" section make it easier to apply. All that is needed at this point is to follow through.

I highly recommend this book to those with an open mind and a willingness to learn what it takes to create wealth. If you are someone who takes action and implement what you learn, this book is definitely worth your time and consideration.

Very informative!
By CC
In recent years, the popularity of "think your way to wealth" have skyrocketed. I've read many of these books, including, The Law of Attraction and The Secret, but I find these books have no tangible results. A lot of my friends have read them, with no results at all. The Money Code actually tells you how to get wealthy with practical steps and tangible results. Many books on wealth are 200-400 pages, when they should only be about 50-100 pages. Many of these books, repeat information, and are long-winded just to fill up space. The Money Code gives you the most practical information and tells you what to do with, in about 50 pages.

For the record, I am not Jewish, but a lot of the information in this book makes sense and is applicable in everyday life. I've seen some tangible results myself. Highly recommended!

The Book of Hygge: The Danish Art of Contentment, Comfort, and Connection, by Louisa Thomsen Brits

“The most poetic of the [hygge books]; I found myself repeatedly returning to its list-like incantation of hyggeligt habits.” —Louisa Kamps, ELLE

Hygge (hoo-gah) is a Danish word but a universal feeling of being warm, safe, comforted, and sheltered—an experience of belonging to the moment and to each other. When life gets hectic, work grows stressful, and the days fly by, unplug and tune in.

Hygge anchors us, reminding us to slow down, to connect with place and with one another, to dwell and savor rather than rush and spend.

When you curl up by the fire with a blanket, or have a simple meal with friends, that is hygge. When you acknowledge the sacred in the secular, or focus on people rather than things, or when you express love through small gestures, that is hygge.

The Book of Hygge is an invitation to welcome abundance and contentment into your life. It is a call to live more fully by focusing on what moves you.

With beautiful full-color photographs and instructive meditations on relishing the everyday, it is your perfect guide to cultivating the coziness that has made Danes the happiest people in the world. The Book of Hygge is designed with an unjacketed, textured cover and crisp, clean interiors.

As seen in the The New Yorker, a cure for SAD in book form.

—Louisa Kamps, ELLE

“Casts hygge as a state of mindfulness: how to make essential and mundane tasks dignified, joyful, and beautiful, how to live a life connected with loved ones. [The Book of Hygge] focusses on the concept’s philosophical and spiritual underpinnings rather than its quirky objects.”
—The New Yorker

“The Book of Hygge is likely to be one of the best guides to creating a more socially connected and rewarding life…A pretty book, soothing to look at, but it also offers a genuine challenge to develop oases of tolerance and peace at home and in the workplace, to balance the alienation, overstimulation and anxious striving of everyday life.”
—Sara Catterall, Shelf Awareness (starred review)

“Best [book] for the philosophy of hygge.”
—Irish Daily Mail, You magazine

The Book of Hygge is a hyggelig read.
By Magdolyn
This book is small. If you read only the aphorisms—which is tempting—you will find the book deeply silly. If you read all the text, you will find the book repetitive, but informative enough to be worth the purchase price. The best way to read it is to skip the aphorisms, which are often trite and sometimes irrelevant. The photos may seem irrelevant, too, but they are important to the overall feeling of hygge that the book evokes. I think the author intended not just to define hygge, and not just to list examples of it, but to provide the reader with an experience of hygge. For me, she succeeded, though not at first because this 192-page book probably should have been half the length with a lot more pictures and a lot less repetition of what comprises hygge. I had to turn off the professional editor in me in order to open myself to this particular expression of hygge. I will, I think, keep this book; overall, it is a sincere effort to communicate hygge to non-Danes . . . and it is not simply a recipe book in disguise. I appreciated that.

Debt: The First 5,000 Years, by David Graeber

[Read by Grover Gardner]

David Graeber's ''fresh . . . fascinating . . . . thought-provoking . . . and exceedingly timely'' -- (Financial Times) history of debt.

Anthropologist David Graeber presents a stunning reversal of conventional wisdom: before there was money, there was debt. For more than five thousand years, since the beginnings of the first agrarian empires, humans have used elaborate credit systems to buy and sell goods -- that is, long before the invention of coins or cash. It is in this era, Graeber argues, that we also first encounter a society divided into debtors and creditors.

Graeber shows that arguments about debt and debt forgiveness have been at the center of political debates from Italy to China, as well as sparking innumerable insurrections. He also brilliantly demonstrates that the language of the ancient works of law and religion -- words like ''guilt,' ''sin,'' and ''redemption'' -- derive in large part from ancient debates about debt and shape even our most basic ideas of right and wrong. We are still fighting these battles today without knowing it.

Debt: The First 5,000 Years is a fascinating chronicle of this little known history -- as well as how it has defined human history and what it means for the credit crisis of the present day and the future of our economy.

Now I understand!
By Ralphe Wiggins
Reading this book has given me an understanding of world history at a level I have never reached before. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in world history.

At the same as reading this book, I was also reading books by Fools Crow, Crow Dog and Bear Heart. Each of these authors describe how the Federal Government set out to use debt to subjugate and eradicate Native Americans just as described in Graeber's book.

Strongly recommend.
By LUCIA J FIERO
From the point of view of an anthropologist, rather than an economist, more science based than myth based. Very enlightening. Author was involved with Occupy Wall Street. Very relevant to the current debt "crises" globally today. Strongly recommend.

Jubilee anyone?
By Terrence N. McCann
I had to read the first half of the book with many breaks. It was almost like a college class in its depth. So many things were being presented with a new perspective that it took time to absorb.

Many things that I had questioned in our current age were demonstrated as being "nothing new under the sun." The patterns of debt were/are foundational in the development of the modern world. And this not necessarily for the ultimate good if taken to the extremes which are the norm, unfortunately.

Banking and debt can help tremendously in creating a prosperous and broadly-people-benefitting economy. But as time goes on in the end the debt becomes extreme and the resultant predation have proved to ultimately destroy.

As pictured in the book the problem seems not to be in the process but in the time. The author advocates a Jubilee every 50 years, or some similar event, to permit the positive side of debt usage and reduce the negative. It seems that much of the negative aspects of debt seem to typically come at the end of such a period. Unfortunately, the process of unlimited debt creation occurs heavily at the end of a such a cycle. The debt becomes more artificial (hedge funds anyone) and onerous for all.
