Wow. I'm impressed!

This was unexpected! A well written book with very little over-the-top silly drama and immature ridiculousness. This book was - shocker! - a mature story. Even though the characters were young, nobody acted a fool and nobody made stupid decisions. Georgia was naive at first, but she was smart and learned how to take care of herself quickly. The drama was contained and the action was realistic. My only real problem with it was that the sex scenes weren't that sensual. I really wanted some hotness between Georgia and Andre, but it was kind of meh on that front. Otherwise, the way they fell in love was very believable and the side characters, tension, and conflict were all realistic (to a point - more about that in a minute). The setting was vibrant and the author has either lived in Juarez or did GREAT research.

The biggest con other than the low sensuality level was the fact that I thought it was wrapped up a little too cleanly and neatly. Also the main villain was kind of a mystery. What did he do, exactly? What was his connection to the cartel? How far was his reach - just Juarez or did he have clout in America too? We were told he was dangerous more than he was shown to be.

All in all, I'd recommend it to fans of suspense/action romance and those who like their romances set in dark, unseemly worlds.

Redemption, salvation and freedom

Kidnapped girl, fighter for the cartel, hiding out in Mexico and trying to get back to the USA...all the ingredients for this exciting new book.
It was only 99 cents when I got it and seemed like it would be my cup of tea and I did enjoy it for the most part.
It wasn't as violent and sexually explicit as most kidnap books are and yet, it still had a fair amount of bloody action in the form of fights (almost to the death) between Andre and all the opponents he was getting paid to fight for his crime bosses.
I felt that Georgia, the girl tricked into going to Mexico and being sold to a rich man, was very immature and sheltered and almost behaved like she didn't have a clue as to what was going on. Her new "owner" was too nice to her (he never did more than kiss her before she escapes) and yet she acted like he was abusing her physically.
The side characters of Maria and Dennis added some interesting dimensions to the story, as Georgia had their help to blend in and learn to live in the world she was thrust into. The last few chapters were chock full of exciting action as they all try to escape their miserable prison of a life under the thumb of the cartel.
A few errors in word choices and wrong names in referring to some big US landmarks...but those are easy fixes.

Dark but lacks Romance

I read this book in response for a honest review. It was definitely dark but the romance appeared to be lacking for me. I like the diversity of characters but they lack substance. I would have preferred more maturity with the characters and sensuality.

Another good historical look

I've read other books by this author and as usual his research is there to see. The fact that it's not just a standard "ninja" book that shows you the weapons and such is refreshing, reading about the tools and weapons is great but reading about the history behind these things and the ninja themselves is a real treat.

Honestly Researched.

The book reads like a thesis paper. The language is dry but not particularly difficult. However, the information is exciting! The book is also very honest about which information is reliable and tries to dry it's conclusions from multiple sources. Hence four stars...maybe five if you want something factual and don't mind dry.

Informative, straightforward, and in-depth.

"In Search Of The Ninja" by Antony Cummins is an organized work. This book has many layers and subsections which compliment one another quite well. I personally own every Shinobi related book Antony has released. Whether you have some previous understanding or even misunderstanding of what Shinobi are you will be satisfied with this book. After each of Antony's previous books such as: Shinobi Soldiers I & II, I felt more and more knowledgeable, yet never truly satisfied with the way the information was being presented. It seemed like there was a back and forth explanation which seized to clarify or dispels myths, making it seem as if you are reading a book dedicated to speculation. After "True Path" was released,I felt a little more accepting with the scattered bits of information. In this particular book there is no more confusion, it is all here! Finally Anthony has broke that boundary between inane and wearisome. The pages are organized with data and pictures accordingly. There are times when the book seems to veer of course, but nonetheless regains its primary focus. If you want to learn about the beliefs, missions, and history of "Ninja", then I would recommend this book. The hardcover and fitting design, along with the sourced information adds a higher sense of quality compares to previous books. I still think it would be nice for a textbook containing EVERYTHING.

The reason for my interest was that Sir Herbert Stanley saved my sister Leonor and I from the horrendous conditions of the Blanquita Theater in the post Bay of Pigs Invasion days of 1961. This theater, now "Karl Marx" or some other nonsense title now a days was a horrible place. No functioning toilets, very little food, sleeping on theater seats, and especially and, the dead who had been machine gunned from the stage.

What struck me as strange, was Sir Herbert's now clearly deceptive statements as to my sister and I. Many, years later it became clear to me that Sir Herbert was far more than a diplomat, but was deeply involve in British Intelligence. He was also a very humane person who a friend of mine who he also saved called him the British Schindler iafter that famous if flawed humanitarian.

It only took two paragraphs from this book to define him as an long time member of that strangely effective British intelligence establishment... The two excerpts that follow make it clear that Marchant was a senior operative even in those long ago days at Bletchely Park.

Page 90 "The Hut Three Watch consisted of about a dozen people...When messages arrived from Hut Six a member of the Hut Three Watch took each one, separated the five-letter groups into German words by pencil strokes and wrote down an English version of the text on a separate piece of paper. The head of the Watch meticulously checked the papers that they have given him and then, in turn, passed them on to the air and military advisors, working in pairs, who sat at an adjacent rectangular table."

page 92 "Initially Travis moved the three out of Hut 3 and put a small committee including Eric Jones in charge. As this was not a workable solution. And in July 1942 Travis made Jones sole head, in the first instance for a trial period of three months. Just over a year after he took over, H. S. Marchant was made his deputy and the pair were in charge to the end of the war. I saw little of Jones but liked Marchant, whom I knew less through his role in Hut Three than as a guiding spirit behind the revues in which members of many of the huts in BP (Bletchley Park) took part, including myself as an occasional scriptwriter. Nonetheless, I read with interest some of the Watch Notes that Marchant, a man with a future, issued with the objective of standardizing procedures in Hut Three and increasing accuracy, and I followed with interest his post-war career when in the 1960s, he became Ambassador first to Cuba, and then Tunisia."

This places in the context Sir Herbert's importance in the long standing British watch on the Soviets, from his youthful trip to the Soviet Union, through his role in Bletchely Park, keeping an eye on such as Philby at then and later at the BBC. And of course his sudden promotion from Consul in San Francisco to Ambassador in Havana....

Still it appears he could not get the US to listen about the Soviet Missiles in Cuba, nor save my father from the wrath of the Castro regime. Thus this fine book has clarified yet another point in the obscure recent history of Cuba and thus helped in the preparation of my own book "Love and War in Cuba."

Not Essential

This is only my 3rd book to read regarding BP. And I stopped reading this book about half way thru as it was just too chatty and autobiographical. I look for organization and depth and did not find it here. This really reads like a memoir and not serious systematic history.

Starry starry night--why did the child take flight?

To begin, I loved this book and found it hard to put aside, as the story of a lost child can certainly pull at your heartstrings. But as I started to read, I felt I was reading a book written by author Jennifer McMahon, as Ms. McMahon bases her stories in Vermont and Ms. Greenwood did likewise with this book. Also, both authors give their characters off-the-wall first names, such as Effie, Plum, Zu-Zu, Winnie, Reggie, Tess, Piper. Every time I saw Plum's and Zu-Zu's names in the book I cringed and felt sorry for these two girls having to go through life with those names! Why, oh, why, do authors have to delve into the unusual to name a child! But, those issues aside, I loved the storyline of a woman on a dirt road seeing a half-nude female child standing alone and forlorn in the middle of the road. As with today's society, wine is always brought into the storyline, as with Tess being half-drunk when she saw the child. In the blink of an eye the child disappears and our story begins. I feel that if you want to commit a crime, go to Quimby, Vermont, as the police were spaced out and never saw the "bad guys" right in front of them, relating to organized pit bull dog fights, with dogs kept in pens in the woods, drugs runners and dealers going back and forth from Vermont to Massachusetts, junkies in their home town and, worse of all, a half-baked girl named Lisa running a run-down daycare center with an aggressive pit bull in the building. How did this daycare ever pass inspection in the State of Vermont? In the midst of all this, Tess is trying to convince the authorities that she did see a child at 12 midnight and she is determined to investigate on her own and find the little girl. There is a subplot of Tess trying in the past to adopt a child from Guatemala and her broken-down marriage with Jake. There is anxiety, darkness and hope in this book and I applaud the ending where HOPE shines through.

One of the best books I have read this year

One of the best books I have read this year. The characters are so well written you feel like they are your friends. The book keeps you guessing through the whole thing. Did Tess really see a little girl or was she just imagining it! What a great read!

It was an excellent idea of the publisher to ask the authors to revise and update their first edition and now the latter has a high quality...
The authors have not forgotten to pay particular attention to new developments in somatic embryogenesis, industrial and agricultural applications of in vitro culture, variant selection, production of secondary metabolites, genetic engineering application of bioreactors, and fermetor techniques...
It is remarkable that the two authors were able to assimilate so much new literature and to incorporate it into this wonderful handbook... In my opinion this book belongs certainly to the three best handooks in the field of in vitro culture of higher plants.

Beautifully horrible

Loved this collection. Felt so close to each character. Every story is filled with vulnerability and intimacy. I love it all, but I think my favorite is Lizzy & Annie, especially the ending *swoon*. Some of the stories hit me with such a hard punch. Other Women was extremely difficult and painful to read. How To Stay Friends was more relatable than I'd like. Honestly, most of it felt like home in a way that's like someone you love rubbing your back as you puke into your own toilet.

As a trans woman, this felt really important to me to have in my life. It repeatedly made me cry in a very cathartic sort of way. Aren't enough stars for this.

I sooooooo loved this book

I sooooooo loved this book. Casey Plett's writing takes us on a journey with her characters...I felt I personally knew each character and the end of each story left me wanting to know more. I found this book so engaging, carrying on with it long after I usually turn the lights out at the end of the day. I couldn't put it down. Read this book! You'll love it!!

How To Make The Most Of A Short Story Collection

I love this book so much. It's rare to find a short story collection in which each story is really enriched by the stories around it. Alone, each story in this book is beautiful and moving. And so many made me cry, but I smiled a lot too, and I love it when a story makes me do both. Together, the stories really demonstrate something that should be totally obvious but maybe isn't: being a trans woman isn't just one thing. There's not one single trans experience. For anyone, trans or cis or whatever, experience is shaped by so many things other than just gender. Parents, place, etc. And there are just so many different experiences that run so much deeper than "oh hey I'm trans." This book so effortlessly deals with place and, in stories set all over the US and Canada, shows how place can impact a person's life. More specifically, attention is paid to, ummm, let's say the climate of acceptance? in each place. Small towns. Big cities. And family. And friends. And work. And cats. And just the tiniest nuances in everyday life and how they can impact experience. But the book never loses sight of the characters in all of this; it shapes them in this. Ugh. I don't even know how to tell you how perfect this book is.
