Finally a clean romance novel!

I was so happy to finally have a CLEAN romance novel to read. There are few of those around anymore, and it was nice to get my "chick-flick" needs filled, without having to skim over sex scenes. Date Shark was a perfect, light read, that kept my interest throughout the whole book.
The characters are easy to fall in love with and the author did a good job of keeping you guessing what will happen until the very end.
I would definitely recommend this book!

love contemporary romance!

This is the first "clean" romance adult novel that I have had the chance to read. DelSheree Gladden offered it to me for an honest review. I am so glad that I was able to.
Leila is a woman that is trying to get her career off the ground, but also wants to find someone to share her life with. Her boss and friend introduced her Eli Walsh who has a dating service to help woman find a special man.
The first date with Eli is disaster. Leila tries to look sophisticated and tries the first thing that was suggested to her off the menu. She is so nervous that is she is unsure if she should continue with this.
Throughout the book Eli and Leila are drawn closer to each other.
This book is so well written. Sometimes I could actually feel the unease that Leila was feeling on her dates.
This is just a super cute must read book. It is an adult novel, but it could be read y almost any age. DelSheree has a descriptive writing style. The characters get close and the sex scenes are not overpowering, just very well written.
The best part of this book (well the whole book is absolutely awesome!) is there is a second one planned! She is getting ready to make the final edits on book 2 and I can't wait to read it.

Engaging Contemporary Romance

Wow! I loved it! DATE SHARK is a really fun premise....wherein our hero (Eli Walsh), a Psychiatrist (MD) moonlights as a Date Shark-- helping women who are clueless about *why* they're messing everything up date-wise with their quirky traits and behaviors, and our adorable heroine, Leila, who's sure she's "broken." It was beautiful watching the pair begin with a business arrangement, progress through stages of friendship, attraction, misunderstanding, self-doubt (on both sides), and eventually falling in love. All while Leila finds her confidence and a boyfriend...(not Eli, of course). Leila learned a great deal about herself, her character grew in rewarding ways, and she wasn't just likeable, she was loveable. I LOVED the inclusion of secondary characters that showed us so very much about Eli's nature, his personality, his past, events that had shaped him into the man he is today-- and *why* Leila is the *only* woman for him, why she's the only one he'll ever love this way, the only one he'd ever be this happy with.

*Sigh.* What a rewarding, romantic read. Both hero and heroine had rewarding character growth, had ample time to truly fall in love, proved themselves worthy of earning their happily-ever-after, and had the basis for a long-lasting relationship I fell all the confidence in the world will *last,* despite any and all conflict that arises in their relationship/ lives going forward.

This was my first exposure to Ms. Gladden's work, and she's won me over! I'm definitely interested in finding more of her books and highly anticipate loving them, too.

DATE SHARK by DelSheree Gladden runs 255 pages (on my eReader, minus front- and back-matter). I received a digital copy of the book from the author in trade for an honest review. The author told me her this book is a "clean romance," and I highly agree with her label. Sensuality Level: wholesome (while fiercely romantic), yet mentions and handles the truth that dating and attached adults have to address the fact that intimacy will either be a part of their relationship or it won't (and have a good reason). Ms. Gladden handles this topic incredibly well. Language--Rated G. Recommended to fans of contemporary romance, regardless of niche preference....including selective readers who choose to avoid graphic language and sexual content.

Kudos to the author!

Perfect for fans of Harry Potter and Percy Jackson

This was technically a re-read for me, but since the first time I read this book was in seventh grade (that's about six years ago) it was like reading it for the first time. The only thing I remembered was that I liked it a lot, and that the satyrs were funny. Neither of those facts changed.

Fablehaven is about Kendra and Seth, a brother and sister who go to stay part of the summer with their rather reclusive grandfather (they're grandmother is mysteriously absent). While there they discover that not all is what it seems and that they're grandparents run a place called Fablehaven- a haven for the magical creatures. Very few things there are safe, and Kendra and Seth have a lot to learn if they're ever going to be the caretakers.

This is one of those books I think everyone should read. I know it's a middle grade book, but like Harry Potter and Percy Jackson it is just as enjoyable for older readers. For one, it doesn't "talk down" to the readers. It treats everyone like a knowledgable reader and the mystery and plot have enough twists and turns for anyone to enjoy. It kept me on the edge of my seat. It also completely transported me to the world of Fablehaven, and the setting was so pervasive I found myself daydreaming about it in my spare time.

A major plus for this book was the two main characters. While Kendra is the protagonist for most of the story, Seth does get a bit of spotlight. They're both super realistic, actually acting their age (she's in eighth grade, he's in sixth) in many ways without being too immature. I will admit that Seth did become a bit annoying, since he causes quite a few problems, but I'm fairly certain this will allow readers to really watch him grow up over the course of the series. The best part about them was their relationship- they acted like real siblings! I cannot count the number of times I've found a sibling relationship to so closely mirror the one I have with my brother. It was so refreshing to see the regular bickering and teasing without making either of them seem like a brat. It also allowed me to connect a ton with Kendra, who's a very likable heroine.

So I'd definitely recommend this to everyone. It's perfect for fans of Harry Potter and Percy Jackson, for sure. It's really just one of the best middle grade novels I've read in a while, and I can't wait to read many, many more in this series (which has, thankfully, been completed so I won't have to wait between novels).

A fantasy classic for all ages - Narnia, Harry Potter, and Bartimaeus fans will love this book!

Ever since my imagination was first captivated by timeless classics like The Chronicles of Narnia and The Hobbit, then more recently, the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling and the Bartimaeus books by Jonathan Stroud, I've been desperate to find other books that are just as wonderful, whimsical, magical, and most importantly, well-written. Fablehaven by Brandon Mull was everything I've been searching for in a fantasy classic appropriate for all ages.

I fell in love with this story from the first paragraph to the very last page and my imagination delighted in every word. The tale opens with two children, Kendra and Seth, riding in the family car on their way to stay with their elusive grandparents for seventeen days while their parents go on a cruise. The children don't know their father's parents that well because the older folks seem to keep to themselves most of the time, so the prospect of being left with these "strangers" is a little frightening for the children. And their grandfather had seemed quite reluctant to have the children left in his care as well, which only added to the mystery. Once the family finally reaches their destination, everyone is immediately taken in by the wondrous beauty of the old house and estate. After the goodbyes are said, Grandpa kindly ushers the children up to the attic and into the room they will be sharing - a room that seems especially designed to delight children, and then he instructs the kids about the rules of the household they are expected to follow. I won't spoil the story for anyone, but the excited children quickly adapt to their amazing surroundings, playing with really cool old toys, painting, swimming in the pool, watching all the many varieties of birds and butterflies in the lush gardens, and curiously exploring the estate. Soon, childhood curiosity leads to breaking some of Grandpa's house rules while he is away tending chores. That is when the really wild adventures begin. Soon Kendra and Seth discover a whole new magical world that they never dreamed could exist and quickly find themselves on the greatest challenge of their lives - to save themselves, their family, and the magical sanctuary called Fablehaven.

This whimsical tale is extremely well-written and brilliantly executed, with interesting, believable characters and very funny dialogue (I found myself laughing many times at the playful banter between the children). Fablehaven is a fantastic treat for anyone's imagination and is sure to delight readers of ALL ages. This is a book I wish I'd had when I was a child. What a fantastic read! Very highly recommend.

UPDATE 2/5/15 - Just finished reading all 5 books in the Fablehaven series (I couldn't stop myself!) and every single book is as thrilling or even more fantastic than the previous one! Such a wonderful adventure this has been! I am so happy to find an author whose family-friendly books I enjoy just as much as Jonathan Stroud's books and I anticipate reading everything I can get my hands on by Brandon Mull. Each book in the Fablehaven series gets a big, shiny 5 stars from me because I know other readers of all ages will love and treasure these books just as much as I do!

Delightful

The world of Fablehaven is captivating, adventurous, and downright clever at times. I am amazed that Brandon Mull managed to get so much story into one final book. This book is a wonderful example of the phenomenon when an author manages to resolve a story in a such satisfying way that, although the reader is content, they find themselves wishing for more pages to turn just to delay leaving such a beloved world behind. I would recommend the Fablehaven series to anybody who loves a great story.

A Beautiful Keepsake

This book (which includes a prayer card, and cassette tape, if complete) is a wonderful keepsake. I have owned it for many years, and bought this one for a gift for a dear friend of mine. If you can find an "as new'' copy, it makes a gift that is cherished. It is presented beautifully, and one of the nicest prayer books I've ever seen. A real 'can't miss'.

Enchanting and Informative

As a review for a book, this might contain spoilers but since Rani Lakshmibai is a historic figure, the time line and major events in her life are well known.

As an Indian I know that Rani Lakshmibai is known as one of the greatest warriors in India and the fact that she was a woman gives her an entirely different status altogether. It is sad to know that not many people outside India know who she was.

Rani Lakshmibai was born in 1828 with the name Manikarnika and grew up under her fathers love and care. He taught her different languages and horsemanship and everything that was accessible only to a man in those days. She married at the tender age of 14 to the Raja Gangadhar Rao Nevalkar of Jhansi who was almost her fathers age. Manikarna became the Rani of Jhansi and her name was changed to Lakshmibai.

She gave birth to a son 8 years into the marriage but unfortunately he died when he was 4 months old. Her husband died soon after because of poor health. Barely in her 20's, Rani Lakshmibai had to take over the reign's of Jhansi. She adopted a boy whom she named Damodar as she had no son of her own. But the British, who had taken control over many provinces in India in the same pretext, refused to acknowledge Damodar as an heir.

As Rani Lakshmibai was trying to find a way out of her predicament, discontent was brewing among the natives in the British army. The discontent reached its peak when British wanted the sepoys to open the new Enfield rifles that were coated with beef and pork fat by biting them. As cows are sacred to the Hindu's and pork not eaten by Muslims, it was the last straw along with the other problems the native army was facing. This led to the famous mutiny also known as India's first war of Independence which started in May 1857 in Meerut after which it spread to various parts of India. Many English men and their families were slaughtered and a few of the territories taken back from the British.

Rani Lakshmibai was one of the leaders of the revolt and marched along with an army with her childhood friends Nanasahib and Tantia Tope to Gwalior. Rani Lakshmibai died in battle on June 17th 1958.

The author Jaishree Misra has not only managed to capture the warrior spirit that the Rani was reknown for but has also effectively managed to captured the woman in her. Ms. Misra shows us the child that Manikarnika would have been, the apprehension of a young girl that was married and made a Queen and the fear and helplessness that the woman and ruler of Jhansi felt. Along with this she also captured the loneliness caused by her husband's and son's early death and the kind of mother she would have been to her adopted son Damodar.

Rani is not just about Rani Lakshmibai's life and rule as a Queen. It is, as every good historical novel should be, a story that is intermingled with the circumstances of that time-the British occupation of India and neighboring countries and the 1857 uprising. So the reader does get to know a lot about that time period. I was enraged by the British who conveniently changed policies to suit themselves. Although we were taught all this in school, the details in the book made me feel like I was learning everything all over again.

The only thing I didn't like about the book is that Rani Lakshmi and Robert Ellis (the British political agent of Jhansi) were shown to have romantic inclinations towards each other, which not only seems absurd but could also hurt the sentiments of a few people (considering Ellis was British and hence enemy). I get what the author was trying to project but she should have taken into account how sensitive some Indians can be about their heroes. But I really do wish that the real Rani found some love with Robert Ellis in reality too. Other than that this book could be a little tedious for someone not interested in the Indian Freedom struggle or someone who is not aware of India and it's freedom struggle at all.

This book deserves to be read just because it is one of the very few novels on Rani Lakshmibai. The fact that it is beautifully and sensitively written is a major plus point. Highly Recommended.

'Rani' by Jaishree Misra explores the transformation of an intelligent girl Manikarnika, into the queen of Jhansi, Rani Lakshmibai. Manikarnika is married to Raja Gangadhar Rao of Jhansi at the age of 13. After marriage, she is renamed Laxmibai. Laxmibai, as the queen of Jhansi takes interest in the affairs of the state. She is fearless to question the policies laid down by the British and open to voice her opinions.

In this book, Rani Laxmibai upholds the undying spirit as the Rani of Jhansi , while facing stiff opposition from the British officers at Calcutta headquarters. Major Robert Ellis, is one of the few trusted friends of Jhansi. Jaishree Misra has perhaps fictionalized the love that Major Ellis and Rani Laxmibai shared and this sentiment takes the central theme of this book.
When the Rani takes on a military garb to defend her Jhansi and answer to the call of the raging times, she leads Nanasahib's forces when she faces General Rose's army on the scrubby plains of Kotah- ki -Sarai. It's during this battle that she lays down her life for the country.

Overall, this is a piece of work for people who are interested in history and wanting to know more about a Rani who played an important part in the Indian freedom movement.

About the Author
Dominik Imseng received a M.A. in Philosophy, German Literature and History of Art from the University of Zurich. He works as a copywriter and journalist in Switzerland and regularly interviews advertising greats. Dominik has never owned a Volkswagen Beetle. In fact, he doesn't even know how to drive.

What advertising used to be.

In today’s data fixated, social media obsessed and increasingly messed up ad agency universe, in “Ugly Is Only Skin Deep,” Dominik Imseng has not only given us a superbly written and well researched history of the unique DDB, VW “Beetle” relationship of the 60’s and 70’s, he has unequivocally reminded us of that oh so brief golden age of advertising when agencies and their clients enjoyed a mutually beneficial business relationship. One based on trust and respect, rather than inherently false pecuniary ends based on bulls*** and banality. It was about ideas, rather than data. That’s why his statement on the very last page of his book rings so true in today’s data driven environment… Advertising must do more than simply try to get people’s attention—it must try to get their respect. Amen to that. Recommended reading to everyone, but particularly for those who were not even born in the age of “Think Small.” Finally, I will leave you with the words of DDB’s obituary for Bill Bernbach in 1982… He said, “The real giants have always been poets, men who jumped from facts into the realm of imagination and ideas.” He elevated advertising to high art and our jobs to a profession. He made a difference. Amen to that.

Superb account of the IPO and equity offerings

I wanted to learn in detail about the process of the IPOs and secondary public offerings. This book gave me pretty much everything I wanted to know and then some. I found it to be easy to read and engaging. It was just a great, eye-opening book. It's totally up to date even though some research findings are a bit dated because things don't really change that much in the IPO world.

The book is international in scope, and should satisfy those interested in US-only, international-only, or a combination IPOs.

You will learn some things that you probably didn't even now existed. Did you know banks allocate part of their fees to stabilazation, which means they will buy shares when the market opens in case there is a downward pressure on the stock. They are allowed to stabilize the price for 30 days.

Also, did you know that the difference between IPO price and the opening price is risk premium? I always thought that IPOs rise so much on the first day BECAUSE they are so great. In fact, the reason for the rise is the opposite: it's because the company is considered risky by IPO investors and they will only pay enough for it to allow for a nice upside to compensate for their risk. That partially explained the huge run-ups in the first day of trading during the bubble. It's hard to admit that I had all this wrong.

You will learn everything about the process from company valuation, to roadshow and marketing, to the way syndicates work and the associated politics, to the fee allocation among various managers and underwriters. You will also learn about ADRs and the way international companies chose listing on various international (US-including) stock exchanges.

Overall, just a superb book for somebody who wants to completely understand the process of equity offerings. The author uses sufficient examples, but I feel that for those wanting even more detail, the author could have included more war stories and easily increased the size of the book by 50-100%. I am not sure whether that would have made it a better book, though. Right now, it's short and sweet. Easily 4.5 stars.

A great reference for mechanically challenged drivers.

This book is a valuable reference for all drivers who would like to understand how their cars work and how to talk to and understand a mechanic. It is well written and organized. I learned what many of those squeaks, clunks & chirps mean & how to do my own maintenance. I'm giving Lucille's to my neice for her 16th birthday.

Easy to read and understand book. Troubleshooting information that every driver should be aware of. Useful tips and hints to understanding and taking care of your car better. A little knowledge helps a lot from getting ripped off by auto mechanics and dealerships.

Note this is not a technical manual and does not instruct you how to repair your car.

Unfortunately the book I ordered was used and wreaked of cigarette smell. Book pages were still in very good condition.

I bought this book when my hubby threatened to leave me last year. He'd whined so much the previous 18 mo. that I said "just go". One thing he NEVER did for me was check oil, tire pressure, etc. I wanted to know basics of under the hood stuff and this book solved the problem.
