About the Author

The late RODNEY D. STORTZ was senior pastor of Twin Oaks Presbyterian Church in St. Louis, which he planted in 1990. He also ministered in churches in Pennsylvania, Indiana, and Missouri. Educated at Covenant College and Covenant Theological Seminary, Stortz was involved in a regional radio ministry, "Oaks of Righteousness," and served as a board member for Trans World Radio and Covenant College.

R. Kent Hughes (DMin, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School) is senior pastor emeritus of College Church in Wheaton, Illinois, and visiting professor of practical theology at Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Hughes is also a founder of the Charles Simeon Trust, which conducts expository preaching conferences throughout North America and worldwide. He serves as the series editor for the Preaching the Word commentary series and is the author or coauthor of many books. He and his wife, Barbara, live in Wyncote, Pennsylvania, and have four children and an ever-increasing number of grandchildren.

W. Arthur Green received his degree in industrial chemistry in 1964 and has more than 40 years of experience working with photoinitiators. Since his retirement, he has continued to work part-time in the UV curing industry as a technical advisor and still presents papers and takes part in training sessions for companies involved in photoinitiators.

About the Author

Matthew J. Smith is Professor of Communication at Wittenberg University. He regularly teaches "Graphic Storytelling" and leads an annual field study at Comic-Con International. Recent books include The Power of Comics: History, Form and Culture (with Randy Duncan) and Online Communication: Linking Technology, Culture, and Identity (with Andrew F. Wood).

Randy Duncan is Professor of Communication at Henderson State University. He is co-author of The Power of Comics: History, Form and Culture (with Matthew J. Smith). Duncan is a co-founder (with Peter Coogan) of the Comics Arts Conference, and serves on the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Comic Art and the Board of Directors of the Institute for Comics Studies. He was recently presented the Inkpot Award for Achievement in Comic Arts during the Pioneers of Comics Scholarship panel at Comic-Con International in San Diego.

A Bit Misleading

When I read "Critical Approaches to Comics" as a title, I expect a pretty thorough investigation of the topic of critical approaches to comics. That's not really the case here. Instead, a handful of methods are included in an article format. It's still useful as the number of critical books about comics is still dreadfully low, but it's not really all that it signifies.
