About the Author
Musa Jouaneh received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Louisiana, Lafayette in 1984 and then went on to the University of California at Berkeley where he received his M.Eng in 1986 and his Ph.D. in 1989. He is currently a Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics at the University of Rhode Island. His teaching interests include Mechatronics, Robotics, Real-Time Monitoring and Control, and Engineering Mechanics. Professor Jouaneh has been the recipient of several awards including URI Outstanding Contributions to Intellectual Property Award (2004),The URI Foundation Teaching Excellence Award (2003), URI Outstanding Intellectual Property Development Recognition Award (2003), The 2002-2003 Edmund and Dorothy Marshall Faculty Excellence Award in Engineering, Advisor to Merit Award Winner in the Lincoln Arc Welding Foundation Design Competition (2001 and 2002), Albert E. Carlotti Faculty Excellence Award in Engineering (1993), Graduate Fellowship, University of California at Berkeley (1984-1985).

David Kahn is the United States Chief Instructor for the Israeli Krav Maga Association. He has trained all branches of the U.S. military in addition to federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies. David is an instructor certified by the State of New Jersey Police Training Commission. He has been featured in Men's Fitness, GQ, USA Today, The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, New Yorker, Marine Corps News, and other major publications. David also authored the books Krav Maga and Advanced Krav Maga and produced the Mastering Krav Maga DVD series. David Kahn resides in Hamilton, N.J.

Perfect companion to hands on training.

I bought this book as a followup to a 3 day seminar I attended with David.

First, let me say that David is one heck of a guy. He is so quiet and unassuming in person that you would never expect him to be the Chief US Insructor for Israeli Krav Maga. He is a pretty patient guy who has no problem helping you over and pver until you get a technique down correctly. Ask me how I know.

This book is a good review of learned defenses/techniques. Any type of skill like this is perishable, so it needs to be reviewed and practiced. Yes, Krav Maga is simple and easy to learn; but, like any system, there are small details that make it most effective. This book has helped me remember some of the finer moves and hand/feet positions that are necessary.

For someone who has never taken a Krav Maga class, this book offers a good introduction to the system and ca allow you to learn quite a bit. Following the pictures and instructions, a person can learn the basics of the techniques. The only drawback is that there is no one to correct any bad techniqies or habits that you may have. There is no replacement for actual dojo instruction, although this book is a good start.

Once you have covered the previous books, this one will take you to the next level of real self defense. This book provides you the opportunity to implement some of the first techniques into your regular practice as you are learning from the first two books. This way, you can build your workouts where you can combine unarmed combat and some combat against an armed attacker. These books go hand in hand with the videos which I'll be adding to my library.

This book illustrates the most current and effective tactics and techniques to prevail against in armed combatant on the street or battlefield. Like all Krav Maga fighting techniques, the methods discussed in this book are simple, instinctive, adaptable and brutally effective. Many of the techniques that discussed in this book have been updated and never before seen outside of the Israel and the Israeli Defense Force (IDF). If you are a serious student of real-world reality-based combatives this book is for you. The book is clear, concise and easy to understand, as well as clearly illustrated. This current book by the author is by far his best presentation on Krav Maga.

Saying you're too busy to pause is like saying you're too fat to exercise: a necessary antidote to work obsession & burnout

Americans live in a culture of misplaced priorities. The richest country in the history of the world is also the only industrialized nation with no mandated paid maternity/paternity leave. Only 4% of companies allow extended paid leave. Work defines people's identities, and overachievers believe that being busy is the highest virtue. Nothing could be more instrumental in the self-infliction of misery. O'Meara exhorts us to pause and reconsider this mindset and its ramifications -- how you got in this mess, how to get out of it, and what to do upon re-entry into polite rat-race society.
Things I like about this book: tons of case studies that you may identify with, including luminaries like Gabrielle Bernstein and Danielle LaPorte; step-by-step instructions for initiating your pause; introduction to incredibly useful concepts like self-validated intimacy and strengths finding; great sections on meditation and digital detox; cool exercises, like the "ten-second micro-pauses" of taking 6 deep breaths or breathing into your palms; easy to read.
O'Meara has done a great service by highlighting the importance of taking a pause and providing the tools to make it happen. If you think you're too busy to pause, that's like thinking you're too fat to exercise: you need this book, stat. I'm hoping this is the beginning of not just a good idea but a great movement to change people's attitudes towards leading more balanced, happy lives.

An important message for all ages; especially millennials

As a young professional, many of this author’s stories and examples resonated deeply.

Ironically, I took many pauses in reading this book. While it’s full of personal stories and flows easily, it’s also full of tips and exercises that made me stop to reflect. I love the description of another reviewer here who called it a treasure map. So, I encourage readers to keep a notebook nearby. The book has many places for readers to pause and journal, and that’s what made it most useful to me.

One of my favorites lines in the book is an offer to reframe how we see pauses: “Life is handing you an opportunity to recalibrate. It is a gift.” I agree wholeheartedly, and I hope this book inspires many more people to give themselves permission to pause!

Intimate with Error and In Love with Truth

In the life of many great Spiritual Masters there is a period in their life that is missing. "They tended to say, essentially, 'I was born, I wandered in confusion for twenty years, and then I awakened.' But they didn't show me the twenty years! They didn't actually lay bare the details that could convince me these holy people had once been like me. If I couldn't believe they had been like me, how could I believe I could become like them?" (p. 14)
Du Bois gives the reader the gift of raw experience nakedly exposed. The journal entries are compiled chronologically making very clear that her Path was a series of glimpses. In the journal entries Du Bois adds modern commentary; both to her younger self and to the reader. On pages 74-75 the modern commentary reflects, "Seems as if through the months and years just about any one of these light-filled insights might have sufficed, doesn't it? Because here it is again: inner awareness of nonduality-yet look at the pages still to turn!" Du Bois shows the reader that the Path can be glimpses: not always is Awakening accomplished and stabilized in the same moment. Footnotes add further clarification and insight to the entries.
Because the journals were kept over two decades we can see the transformation that takes place. The rage, anger, and every other emotional arising are laid bare and eventually dissolve into Love and Clarity. Also, Du Bois lets us see how great insight may then be followed by great obscurations. And how the desire to serve can pull a person from their happy little home mentally, physically and emotionally.
Personally, I found this to be an invaluable book. The detail to which Du Bois uses her own experience to point out the distinct negative mental states the West -particularly the U.S.- is capable of generating is powerful.
Little gems are tucked throughout the book to offer further guidance:
"Nothing to grasp at
or push away --
simply observing
mind's pure play" (p. 376)
I would recommend this book to those looking for an honest offering of Truth and Love, and how "We already are what we aspire to become. We are templates of truth, to be laid bare by love." (p. 17)

The Greatest Adventure

For those of us who read about the lives of masters and practitioners on the "spiritual path" to enhance our own efforts, Barbara DuBois' LIGHT YEARS is a very significant contribution to this literary tradition. The gravitas of her work is not so much her "attainment" if you will (although one suspects she is making significant progress), but the sharing of her naked awakeness, be it beatific or ugly. In psychology her self-expression might be called transparent--what you see is what you get. The emotional and cognitive honesty of her disclosures regarding a large section of her adult life has the unqualified feeling of authenticity, a ring of truth.

The "truth" for this memoirist, however, included all the blemishes, peccadillos, grand errors and personal breakthroughs she encountered during this period, unflinchingly described in often poetic prose and occasional verse. Moreover, beyond the limits of the genre, readers will be delighted with her fondness for words and word play. She seems to be a playful sort (e.g., at p.186-87, "Blowing my Knows," "Prophecies according to Nostrildamus" and "S'not what you think it is.") One senses there is an Ivy Leaguer lurking there somewhere.

Most importantly her book imbues in the willing reader the fortitude to "stick with it" and never stop watching the mind. Sogyal Rinpoche has noted that this generation needs spiritual "role models" and Barbara DuBois gives us that here in reminding us that "to err is human," yet we have to get back up on that saddle and continue to ride. In that she demonstrates the indefatigability that distinguishes the masters and can inspire us all.

Her memoir style is a bit challenging, but worth the rewards. I have the tendency to read early and closing sections of books before I launch into them fully and I feel the reader will benefit from that here by reviewing pages 381-383 at the outset to maximize their appreciation of the author's adventure. Yet this limitation is a trifle. One is left wondering when and if DuBois will pen the next chronological section of her journey in this life, late adulthood. We all need role models. I think we have a courageous one here.

An Inspiring Book

I greatly appreciate Barbara sharing her journey. Her relationship with her teacher made me realize that, even though many seekers want a spiritual teacher, having such a teacher would not make life easy. Barbara's teacher, Beloved, did not coddle her student, rather she challenged her time and again. A dedicated student must be willing to be peeled down to emptiness--and apparently it isn't easy, and it doesn't always feel like love. Beloved was a mirror to her student and the mirror did not always reflect how she thought she looked. Most readers will probably be able to relate to Barbara's spasms of opening and closing, opening and closing, and the slow release of the fetters that bind. Her journey inspires me to keep on with this path, and to know that the path itself is rewarding. I found that the book gained momentum, and I looked forward to the next time I was able to open its pages.
