Conversations with My Agent, by Rob Long

Rob Long rose from staff writer to become co-producer of Cheers in its final season. When the show went off the air, he went from being top dog on a highly rated program to just another writer scrambling to get any project rolling. It wasn't pretty, but as Conversations with My Agent demonstrates, in hindsight at least, that's the hilarious reality of life in the wonderful world of the Hollywood sitcom. Suddenly thrown into the absurdity of Hollywood television development, Long and his writing partner find themselves with an office, an assistant, lots of cigars, and absolutely no idea what they are going to write. But that doesn't matter in Hollywood, where hype is more important than substance. Especially when you have a good agent. Here Long recants the true tale of his time in that limbo, from the wildly funny but awful meetings with studio executives to the unending string of phone calls with his self-absorbed agent, who is emblematic of the uniquely absurd chaos that is Hollywood.
Conversations with My Agent received terrific reviews.
Appeals to an enormous market including aspiring writers, screenwriters, producers, and directors.

From Publishers Weekly
Amusing and insightful, this is a deftly sketched portrait of life inside the Hollywood "development deal," that limbo in which writers get paid generously to create something new for a notoriously fickle set of bosses. Long and his writing partner, still in their 20s, had risen to become coproducers of the popular TV series Cheers before it expired; they were rewarded with an office, long lunches and many meetings at which to try to pitch their ideas. (No, their new shows never took off.) Long makes the story entertaining by rendering many scenes-especially those involving his nameless, genderless agent-in sitcom form (dialogue, stage directions, etc.). "People in this business love their souped-up vocabulary," Long writes, and he affectionately skewers Hollywood pretension ("I love a quirky love," says one exec). Long doesn't tell us much about himself or his relationship with his writing partner, but the story skitters along fast enough for that to be forgivable. And when one reviewer calls their pilot "snappy" and another denounces it as "without snap," you can sympathize if well-paid creative types think the world wretched. Unfortunately, the book's charm and verisimilitude are vitiated by Long's contradictory admissions that it is "half true" and "mostly true."
Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
Television writer Long (Cheers) has written a humorous account of what it means to be a TV scriptwriter in Hollywood. It's a TV version of Linda Obst's recent insider's view of feature filmmaking, Hello He Lied (LJ 10/1/96). Interspersing the book with conversations with his agent and writing in the style of a TV script, Long imparts the "inside" story on getting a TV deal, "one of those entertainment industry creations that...sounds suspiciously like goofing off. Essentially the studio agrees to pay a writer a minimum sum,...hopeful that the writer...will decide, 'What the hell, I may as well create a hit television show.' " Though very funny at times, it's a bit too much of an insider's view for the general reader. Though not an essential purchase for public libraries, it would be a good addition to media colletions.?Rosellen Brewer, MOBAC Lib. System, Monterey, Cal.
Copyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
In three short years, Long and his TV-show-writing partner, Dan Staley, progressed from hopefully offering scripts around Hollywood to being co-executive producers of the perennial hit sitcom, Cheers. But then, after just one season with Long and Staley at the helm, series star Ted Danson decided to move on, and the pair's cushy jobs instantly turned into a paragraph on their shared resume. Their brief stint at the top and their struggle to regroup and carry on are the subjects of Long's entertaining, fast-moving memoir that profits from his decision to cast the text into TV-script format, complete with stage directions. The story lends itself delightfully to this device. Whether as an entertaining recreational read or as a cautionary tale for would-be scriptwriters, a worthwhile effort. Mike Tribby

Great Casual Reading Experience
By Bruce Bevitz
This book includes a series (most probably apocryphal) of conversations with Rob Long's agent(s) which sheds light on his world. It was a quick read and funny, but mostly grin and nod funny, not laugh so that those around you think you are demented funny. I knew about Rob Long from his podcasts and his articles, and purchased this book because it was mention by somebody on one of these podcasts, either GLOP or Ricochet. This book is apolitical, but exhibited the mild manner and common sense that I had heard from the author in the aforementioned podcasts. Now understand:this book is no earth shattering epic, and it is probably will not classified as a classic, but it made me want to know the author better. He appeared to be the type of person I would want to have as a friend.

funny look inside the bizness of being a) a Junior ...
By judygarlandheartbreaker.com
A realistic, funny look inside the bizness of being a) a Junior Writer for TV, and, b) graduating to show-runner and the frustrating personalities
one encounters. Told in a wry, slangy voice, Rob Long never loses his humor, gives a dynamic snapshot of an industry built on emotional quicksand. Most enjoyable if you're interested in this milieu.

Everything you ever wanted to know about television...
By Tony Martyr
Funny and insightful. The two books together works very well - hard to believe he didn't write them like that! Rob Long probably made some enemies with the stories related here, but I thank him. A must-read for anyone interested in TV writing & production.

Lots of information, lots of photos, lots of fun
By Flint Mitchell
I got this recently, and I'm glad I did. This book has extensive coverage of both Lost in Space and Land of the Giants, including interviews, photos, episode guides, and so on. Also covered are some of Irwin Allen's other projects, such as the seldom seen "City Beneath the Sea," "The Man From the 25th Century," and "Swiss Family Robinson."

I especially liked the coverage of Irwin Allen clooectibles. I had some of that stuff when I was a kid, but most of it I'm seeing for the first time.

My interests are mainly in LIS, but the LOTG section is just as interesting, to the point that I'm hoping that AFL decided to rerun the show again, just so I can see the episodes.

My favorite thing to do with this book is to flip through it at randsom and start reading. I keep finding out things I didn't know before.

As for the comparisons between LIS and Trek that another reviewer whined about, the two shows are linked. Both had similar histories: an unaired pilot that was later cut up and edited into other episodes, and both lasting exactly three seasons. Both shows placed scientific accuracy on the back burner: with both shows, rousing good entertainment was first and foremost. And both shows succeeded.

This is a great book, and a definite must for fans of either LIS or LOTG.

GREAT FACTS, GREAT TRIVIA, GREAT FUN
By L. Holland
This is Volume 2 of the wonderful Irwin Allen Scrapbook series. The book contains a thorough examination
of Lost in Space and Land of the Giants.

The Lost in Space section begins with a thoughtful assessment of Irwin Allen's virtues and vices. There are
cast biographies, a list of guest stars, an interview with Bill Mumy and an extensive question and answer
section with Jonathan Harris. Every episode has a detailed plot synopsis complete with notes and trivia,
and I was delighted to find the Great Vegetable Rebellion in all its immortal wackiness. There are also
details on 3 unfilmed episodes and photos scattered throughout the text.

The Land of the Giants section is equally comprehensive with cast biographies, episode guides, trivia,
an interview with Don Matheson and a wonderful 42 page photo gallery.
The book also includes sections on Irwin Allen's other series and pilots such as Swiss Family Robinson.
Pictures and details are provided of Allen collectables from all the TV series.

This set begins with the Irwin Allen Scrapbook Volume 1 with a similar layout containing Voyage to the
Bottom of the Sea and Time Tunnel.
Together these 2 volumes are an absolute must for Irwin Allen's fans who love his 1960's television series.
They are both wonderful reference guides and provide hours of enjoyment and fun.
Not to be missed!

Irwin Forever !
By D. J. Morgan
Great collection of rare articles and info from long defunct sci-fi tv shows for those of us in their 50s who remember them well. Corny shows yes, but oh so nostalgic and reading these articles bring back the memories and offer insights into the cast which you can savor and relish as you wax nostalgic. Great read, great book.

‘Everyone agreed that the day was just right for the picnic to Hanging Rock - a shimmering summer morning warm and still, with cicadas shrilling...’ St Valentine’s Day, in the midst of the hot summer of 1900, a party of schoolgirls went on a picnic to Hanging Rock. Some were never to return... An Australian classic, the disappearance of three girls and a schoolteacher at Hanging Rock has captivated and intrigued audiences for generations. “Pure magic. Every fashion film and NYU undergraduate thesis takes its cues from this lyrical masterpiece. In college I tried to make a satirical remake entitled Lunchtime at Dangling Boulder, but all my actors slept too late.” —Lena Dunham, on the film adaptation

“[From the] Victorian hothouse atmosphere and fetishism . . . and its focus on the burgeoning sexual curiosity of the girls (and the women) . . . to Gothic terrors, supernatural wonder, divine mysticism, or the imperialist unconscious . . . Picnic actively encourages a host of fantasies.” —Megan Abbott, author of You Will Know Me,The Fever, and Dare Me, in an essay for The Criterion Collection’s Blu-ray/DVD edition of the film

“A sinister tale… laced with touches of other-worldliness” —The Guardian

“Deliciously horrific.” —The Observer

“The fact that most people believed that this palpable fiction was a record of a real event is not merely a tribute to the writer… but a testimony to the atavistic power of its theme.” —The Spectator

“Beautifully haunting.” —The Sun Herald (Australia)

About the Author
Joan Lindsay was born Joan Beckett Weigall in Melbourne, Australia, in 1896. She attended Clyde Girls Grammar School, the model for Appleyard College in "Picnic at Hanging Rock", and the National Gallery of Victoria Art School, where she studied painting. On Valentine's Day 1922 she married Daryl Lindsay in London. She chose Valentine's Day 1900 as the setting for "Picnic at Hanging Rock", her best-known work, which was first published in 1967 and is the basis for the 1975 film of the same name by Peter Weir. She died in Melbourne in 1984.

OOOOOOOOOOH, IT'S GOOD!
By A Customer
I had to hunt for a copy of this out-of-print novel through the internet, and order it used from a bookstore in Australia, but it was well worth the effort! Beautifully written, this 1986 re-issue has period photographs that add greatly to the enigmatic story. The excellent 1975 Peter Weir movie version is quite faithful to the book. Interestingly, there is a Chapter 18 that is considered the "lost" final chapter that resolves the mystery. Joan Lindsay wrote it, but was asked by the publishers to withhold it from publication pending the movie rights. The caveat was that the chapter would only be published after her death. Lindsay died in 1984, her book was re-issued in 1986 (minus Chapter 18) and the "missing" chapter was finally published in 1987 under the title "Secret of Hanging Rock." If you can find "Picnic at Hanging Rock," buy it & savor it. It's THAT good. Rent the video too!

Elegant, chilling, and very Australian
By Sally Howes
PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK deserves its place as an Australian classic for the simple beauty of its prose and for its unique and extremely intriguing plot, but it must be said that in the end, it is an extremely frustrating story, even for those most skilled at reading between the lines. It has the feel of a very polished yet not quite finished manuscript, and once the chilling and compelling mystery of the disappearance of three boarding school girls and a governess at the Hanging Rock has been set into motion, the momentum of the narrative is lost and ends up meandering toward a ghostly, spine-chilling non-ending.

However, there are certainly many things to like about the book, not the least of which is its cheerful and artless "Australianness." The narrative voice has a very tongue-in-cheek tone that, funnily enough, reminds me of no other book so much as Miles Franklin's MY BRILLIANT CAREER, another Australian classic set in a similar era. Something that I was not expecting from Lindsay's book was the fact that it is quite often laugh-aloud funny, at least in the beginning. The story has the feel of a typical girls' boarding school tale in the English style, yet with a strong vein of irreverence that marks it as undeniably Australian.

It is also very difficult to dislike virtually any of the personable characters in this book. Luckily, while it seems at first glance that the reader is dealing with an indistinguishable gaggle of young ladies, governesses, young men, and a few older persons, they quickly and apparently effortlessly sort themselves out into distinct personalities. With its characteristic hint of levity, for example, we are told that: "Reputed to have mastered Long Division in the cradle, Marion Quade had spent the greater part of her seventeen years in the relentless pursuit of knowledge. Small wonder that with her thin intelligent features, sensitive nose that appeared to be always on the scent of something long awaited and sought, and thin swift legs, she had come to resemble a greyhound." PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK is also a particularly egalitarian book, in which servants may not quite be treated as equals by their employers, but are certainly treated well. The story itself often privileges the wits, talents, and pragmatism of the servants over their masters'.

The atmospheric impact of this book cannot be overstated. Its sense of place and the mood imposed irresistibly by the natural environment are among its very strongest attributes, so that the scene cannot only be pictured but heard, smelled, touched, and tasted as well. This is just one example of many beautiful natural descriptions: "Leaves, flowers and grasses glowed and trembled under the canopy of light; cloud shadows gave way to golden motes dancing above the pool where water beetles skimmed and darted."

Once the story takes its chilling turn, however, it becomes apparent that these schoolgirls are completely artificial in the natural world of the Hanging Rock: "Insulated from natural contacts with earth, air and sunlight, by corsets pressing on the solar plexus, by voluminous petticoats, cotton stockings and kid boots, the drowsy well-fed girls lounging in the shade were no more a part of their environment than figures in a photograph album, arbitrarily posed against a backcloth of cork rocks and cardboard trees." Is this why the environment itself seems to turn on them, perhaps even consume them?

Throughout the story, the Rock is a solid, ominous, mysterious presence, in the foreground as often as it is in the background. Whether being viewed, talked about, or just thought about, it is always there. In this entirely unique book, it may even be true to say that the central "character" is this inanimate monolith: "The shadow of the Rock lay with an almost physical weight upon their hearts. The thing was beyond words; almost beyond emotion."

After the disappearance of the four women, PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK uses vagueness and foreshadowing statements to the greatest effect in creating a mood of ominous, possibly even supernatural, intrigue and suspense. In an odd way, the various men investigating the girls' disappearance in their various ways all seem to highlight the mystery that women in general constitute for men. There is a strong current of "otherness" throughout the book, whether it be the prim young ladies juxtaposed against the natural environment or the eternal divide between men and women.

When it reaches its height of suspense and horror, the narrative is at its most evocative: "To take a sword and plunge it through your enemy's vitals in broad daylight is a matter of physical courage, whereas the strangling of an invisible foe in the dark calls for quite other qualities." Perhaps this, along with the book's many other attributes, is enough. Just don't expect to come out of PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK with any fewer questions than you had when you entered its pages.

Mystery In The Australian Outback
By Starfish
The book is very good. It's an interesting story about a girls' boarding school in Australia, run by Mrs. Appleyard, a very proper and stuffy lady. She permits a field trip to Hanging Rock, a spot that is deal for picnics and relaxation. Several of the girls and their mistress hike up the mountain as no one really pays too much attention. They do not return. Not then. Not ever. No one knows what happened to them. A search party ensues to no avail. A survivor is located. She is comatose and of no help whatsoever to the investigator. Mrs. Appleyard's school becomes victim to the mysterious disappearances because boarders and their parents raise serious doubts as to the safety of the school and the supervision or lack of by Mrs. Appleyard or her hires. Strange coincidences unravel the lives of Mrs. Appleyard and the people around her.

I loved the movie more for the visuals, but the book was very interesting to read. I am frustrated in that I cannot posit a theory as to what actually happened at Picnic Rock. Were the girls murdered, were they killed in an accident, did they become lost and therefore, unable to survive the brutal heat of the Australian outback and various predators that lurk there? There is no answer and therefore, the book becomes an exercise in frustration. I do recommend it, for people who love to read mysteries.

•An exclusive preview chapter from Jean M. Auel’s The Land of Painted Caves, on sale in hardcover March 29, 2011
•An Earth’s Children series sampler including free chapters from the other books in Jean M. Auel’s bestselling series
•A Q&A with the author about the Earth’s Children series

Ayla, the independent heroine of The Clan of the Cave Bear and The Valley of Horses, sets out from the valley on Whinney, the horse she tamed. With her is Jondalar, the tall, handsome, yellow-haired man she nursed back to health and came to love. Together they meet the Mamutoi--the Mammoth Hunters--people like Ayla. But to Ayla, who was raised by the Clan of the Cave Bear, they are “the Others.” She approaches them with mixed feelings of fear and curiosity.

Talut, a powerful bear of a man with bright red hair, a booming laugh, and a gentle heart, and his tall, dark-haired sister, Tulie, are the leaders of the Lion Camp of the Mamutoi. It is here that Ayla finds her first women friends, but some among the Mamutoi dislike Ayla because she was raised by “flatheads,” their name for the people of the Clan. Ayla is haunted by her memories of the Clan because Rydag, a child of mixed parentage living with the Mamutoi, bears so strong a resemblance to her own son, Durc.

It is the Mamutoi master carver of ivory--dark-skinned Ranec, flirtatious, artistic, magnetic--who fascinates Ayla. She finds herself drawn to him. Because of her uncanny control over animals, her healing skills, and the magic firestone she discovered, Ayla is adopted into the Mammoth Hearth by Mamut, the ancient shaman of the Great Earth Mother.

Ayla finds herself torn between her strong feelings for Ranec and her powerful love for the wildly jealous and unsure Jondalar. It is not until after the great mammoth hunt, when Ayla’s life is threatened, that a fateful decision is made.

Set in the challenging terrain of Ice Age Europe that millions of Jean Auel’s readers have come to treasure, The Mammoth Hunters is an epic novel of love, knowledge, jealousy, and hard choices--a novel certain to garner Jean Auel even greater acclaim as a master storyteller of the dawn of humanity.

From Publishers Weekly
The authenticity of background detail, the lilting prose rhythms and the appealing conceptual audacity that won many fans for The Clan of the Cave Bear and The Valley of the Horses continue to work their spell in this third installment of Auel's projected six-volume Earth's Children saga set in Ice Age Europe. The heroine, 18-year-old Ayla, cursed and pronounced dead by the "flathead" clan that reared her, now takes her chances with the mammoth-hunting Mamutoi, attended by her faithful lover, Jondalar. Gradually overcoming the prejudice aroused by her flathead connection, Ayla wins acceptance into the new clan through her powers as a healer, her shamanistic potential, her skill with spear and slingshot and her way with animals (she rides a horse, domesticates a wolf cub, both "firsts," it would seem, and even rides a lion). She also wins the heart of a bone-carving artist of "sparkling wit" (not much in evidence), which forces her to make a painful choice between the curiously complaisant Jondalar, her first instructor in love's delights, and this more charismatic fellow. The story is lyric rather than dramatic, and Ayla and her lovers are projections of a romantic rather than a historical imagination, but readers caught up in the charm of Auel's story probably won't care. 750,000 first printing; $300,000 ad/promo; paperback rights to Bantam; Literary Guild and Doubleday Book Club dual main selections; author tour. From Library Journal
Ayla, the prehistoric heroine of Auel's immensely popular series, meets a new clan, the mammoth hunters, in this eagerly awaited third installment to the saga. During her sojourn with this clan, Ayla and her lover, Jondalar, encounter a variety of crises triggered by Ayla's past and her involvement with another man. Auel has created an amazing and fascinating world. Every aspect of society and culture is accounted for; no detail is too small to be included. To enjoy this novel the reader must accept the author's concepts and cultural descriptions. Despite the sometimes too-modern dialogue and the often fatuous sex, this is a solid tale that will be particularly enjoyed by those who've been following Ayla's fortunes. Literary Guild and Doubleday Book Club dual main selections. Lydia Burruel, Mesa P.L., Ariz.

A Little Bit of the Magic Has Been Lost.
By LostBoy76
I have recently finished the main four books of the "Earth's Children" series, and I have decided to review "The Mammoth Hunters" because I thought that this third book is where the series started to lose some of it's charm. That doesn't mean that it isn't worth reading, though. I just have a few qualifications. "Spoilers"
In the first two books, "The Clan of the Cave Bear" and "The Valley of Horses", the huge amount of detail about the climates, landscapes, and plantlife never really bothered me too much, but in this book (and the last book, "Plains of Passage") I found it dwelt on the most trivial little things for ages! Most of the new characters are fairly likable, though none of them truly stand out, except maybe Rydag. Sometimes the author Ms. Auel seems more interested in Ayla's animal friends than in the people. A very large portion of this book is dedicated to the "love triangle" between Ayla, Jondalar, and Ranec, and this is frustrating for a number of reasons. First, it isn't really a love triangle at all; it is a "misunderstanding" between Ayla and Jondalar which causes Ranec to think that Ayla is available. Second, Ranec is an annoying and slightly creepy character, so I was never really interested in what the heck happened to him. Third, it takes over three hundred pages to resolve this issue!! Literally, three hundred pages of Ayla and Jondalar staring longingly at each other when the other one isn't looking, saying awkward things to each other, getting angry with each other, and so on. That doesn't mean that all three hundred pages are monotonous or boring. There are some very sad and touching scenes that will stay with you: Jondalar crying and clutching the wolf puppy at night while Ayla is sleeping with Ranec; Ayla sobbing to Mamut (the old MogUr-like character), asking him why Jondalar doesn't love her anymore; Jondalar losing control of himself when he's alone with Ayla and taking her by force (though she allows it); Ayla panicking and confessing her feelings when Jondalar leaves without her. These, and a few other scenes, are very endearing, though you may want to scream at Jondalar once in a while for not seeing what's so plainly obvious to everyone else. It never really leaves the reader's mind that all this drama and heartache could have been resolved in about two minutes if the two people just spoke to each other.
On a side note, there seems to be a lot of people taking issue with the sex scenes in this series and I find it very odd. There is also violence, death, and (in the first book) a brutal rape scene, but no-one seems too concerned about these things. I'd call that a serious misplacement of values. Ayla and Jondalar are both adults and in love, so what's the problem? If you're squeamish about the sex scenes, then just skip them! The explicit descriptions are pretty entertaining, if you ask me! Ms. Auel uses hilarious adjectives for the sex scenes (eg. "Jondalar's large throbbing manhood", "Ayla's pink place of pleasure", ect.) that had me laughing out loud at some points!! In the fourth book, Ayla and Jondalar even "invent" the 69 position!
In conclusion, I'll say that this book (and the fourth) is worth reading if you have already read the first two and really enjoyed them. As a stand-alone novel, it doesn't quite work. It's entertaining at times, but nowhere near as brilliant as the first, or as fun as the second.

I want to start by saying I love the concept and set up of this cookbook. Lots of great information on eating well and the recipes are easily customized to meet your needs based on where you're at with your fitness.
We love to cook at our house and we're excited to check out Mr. Coates' book. Unfortunately, of the 5 different recipes we tried, only the Lemon Cashew Bars were worth repeating. It may be my family and our tastebuds but in general, food was flavorless or simply odd. Disappointing.
