About the Author
Kenneth Hicks does not believe in “luck”. Through talent, hard work and experience he has been honing his craft since 1998. The Cleveland, Ohio native released his first book; I Know this to be True in 2004. After founding Obelisk Media Group with co-founder/ author Jibreel B. Turner Sr., Hicks went on to release Inter-Course: The Chronicles of a Cyber Casanova and Learning the Way: The Erudition of a Sharice Bell (co-written by Turner) both in 2011. Kenneth currently resides outside of Los Angeles, CA where he continues to write novels as well as screenplays. Aside from writing, Kenneth enjoys music, fashion, sports (especially his Cleveland Browns, Cavaliers, and Ohio State football) and being a father. Natural Life is his fourth book.

This is it!

I'm picky. Very picky. I consider myself a pretty decent writer, so when I read other books there are certain things I MUST have to keep me interested. Action? Check. Suspense? Check! Writing that isn't repetitive?? Triple check!! This was a brilliant piece of literature and a real page turner. If you want a book that is guaranteed to keep your attention, look no further. The author truly delivered. You definitely won't be disappointed. I'm looking forward to his next book. Well done!

MY EYES WERE OPENED BY NATURAL LIFE!!!

I've read a lot of novels in my life, but none were as enthralling as Natural Life. This book painted portraits (with words, of course) about life growing up in the inner-city and the prison system that were so vivid, it was like I lived the experiences myself. I learned so much about a world which was completely foreign to me, that it really changed my outlook on life. Seriously! I give Natural Life my highest recommendation, especially to anyone who enjoys fiction that frankly isn't all that fictitious. Natural Life tackled some very real problems that effect every major American city. And the actual writing was magnificent.

Natural Life is perfect for anyone wanting to read an exciting, compassionate and honest story featuring complex characters facing authentic issues. I took a chance on this book and I'm extremely happy that I did.

About the Author
For more than fifty years, Don Gossett has been serving the Lord through full–time ministry. Born again at the age of twelve, Don answered his call to the ministry just five years later, beginning by reaching out to his unsaved family members. In March 1948, Don overcame his longtime fear of public speaking and began his ministry in earnest, preaching for two country Baptist churches in Oklahoma.


Blessed with the gift of writing, Don became editor of the Bible College magazine in San Francisco; afterward, he was invited to become editor of an international magazine. Following this, he served as editor of T. L. Osborn's Faith Digest, a magazine that reached over 600,000 homes each month.


Don has penned many works, particularly ones on the power of the spoken word and praise. His writings have been translated into almost twenty languages and have exceeded twenty–five million in worldwide distribution. Additionally, Don has recorded scores of audio series. His daily radio broadcast, launched in 1961, has been released into eighty–nine nations worldwide.


Don raised five children with his first wife, Joyce, who died in 1991. In 1995, Don found lifelong love again and married Debra, an anointed teacher of the Word. They have ministered worldwide and have lived in British Columbia, Canada, and in Blaine, Washington State.


In September 2009, Don and Debra (also an ordained minister) founded a new church in Vancouver, British Columbia, where they continue to serve as pastors. The International Community Church truly is an international body of believers with members from many nations sharing a vision: to bring the saving, healing, and restoring power of Jesus to the community, locally and abroad.

The invention of the cylinder phonograph at the end of the nineteenth century opened up a new world for cultural research. Indeed, Edison's talking machine became one of the basic tools of anthropology. It not only equipped researchers with the means of preserving folk songs but it also enabled them to investigate a wide spectrum of distinct vocal expressions in the emerging fields of anthropology and folklore. Ethnographers grasped its huge potential and fanned out through regional America to record rituals, stories, word lists, and songs in isolated cultures.

From the outset the federal government helped fuel the momentum to record cultures that were at risk of being lost. Through the Bureau of American Ethnology, the Smithsonian Institution took an active role in preserving native heritage. It supported projects to make phonographic documentation of American Indian language, music, and rituals before developing technologies and national expansion might futher undermine them.

This study of the early phonograph's impact shows traditional ethnography being transformed, for attitudes of both ethnographers and performers were reshaped by this exciting technology. In the presence of the phonograph both fieldwork and the materials collected were revolutionized. By radically altering the old research modes, the phonograph brought the disciplines of anthropology and folklore into the modern era.

At first the instrument was as strange and new to the fieldworkers as it was to their subjects. To some the first encounter with the phonograph was a deeply unsettling experience. When it was demonstrated in 1878 before members of the National Academy of Sciences, several members of the audience fainted. Even its inventor was astonished. Of his first successful test of his tinfoil phonograph, Thomas A. Edison said, "I was never taken so aback in my life."

The cylinders that have survived from these times offer an unrivaled resource not only for contemporary scholarship but also for a grassroots renaissance of cultural and religious values. In tracing the historical interplay of the talking machine with field research, The Spiral Way underscores the natural adaptiblity of cultural study to this new technology. Erika Brady is an associate professor in the folk studies programs at Western Kentucky University. She served as technical consultant and researcher on the staff of the Federal Cylinder Project of the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress.

First wax cylinders and then discs recorded the myths, music, language, and religious ceremonies of vanishing Native American (Crow, Hopi, Navajo, Omaha, Ute, and Zuni) cultures. With restraint and candor, Brady reports on the pioneering work of Jesse Walter Fewkes and Frank Hamilton Cushing and discusses the social problems always inherent within the complex relationships among collector and informant and machine in anthropological fieldwork. Her own glimpses into the methodological ideas of Franz Boas and Ernst Mach (among others) reveal the emerging empiricism that dominated the social sciences at the beginning of the 20th century. Brady emphasizes the scientific value of phonograph recordings in preserving aspects of those cultures that have changed or disappeared. An Important Record of History

This book is a fine addition to the history of the phonograph and other forms of recording technology. Erika Brady begins with a consideration of early recordings, focusing her analysis on relationships between perception and audio technology. She then winds her way through implications of how this relationship is relevant to developing ethnographic descriptions of folklore and other forms of expressive culture. The book will be useful to anyone interested in phenomenology, social history, intellectual history, and ethnographic description. Much of her work provides a strong basis for more nuanced readings of ways in which new forms of technology affect--and are affected by-- ethnographically-grounded research. Brady is an insightful writer and a fine stylist. Her subtle wit enfolds sharp commentary that reveals hidden nuances of history, and her arguments are always cogent, clear, and intriguing. The book is written from Brady's experience of working with hundreds of old recordings, and her practical experience of handling and listening to the recordings is clearly evident in her writing. The book is illustrated with historical and contemporary photographs that are well-chosen and provide rich context for the study.

For readers interested in how recording technology has influenced the way that history and culture is represented, this book is essential reading. Brady has personally handled thousands of hundred-year old recordings of stories, folktales, traditional music, and other performances. She writes from a great familiarity with both the early recording technology and the material on the records, and she insightfully uses a range of research techniques and academic insights to demonstrate convincingly that the ability to make audio recordings has significantly changed the practice of folkloristic and anthropological fieldwork. Among the big changes that she documents are greater emphasis on listening to indigenous voices and a concomitant sense of increased ethical responsibility to the societies whose cultural traditions are documented.

Essential reading for any Madness fan

John Reed presents a history from the band's origins as the North London Invaders in 1976 to their breakup in 1986, through their reunion at Madstock in 1992 up to the band's 2009 magnum opus "The Liberty of Norton Folgate." The author doesn't make any judgments, but rather presents the good with the bad and lets the reader draw his or her own conclusions. I'm a diehard Madness fan, and I love them even more after reading this book.

The Ultimate Madness Story

This book is the ultimate Madness story for fans. Written long after the band broke up, it doesn't whitewash their story like books written during their heyday might have. It's extensive and honest. It provides an interesting look at the bands beginnings, their popularity during the 80s, and what they've been up to since then.

Tells you both everything and nothing about Madness

On page 235 of this book the author writes "It's difficult to ascertain whether Barson's decision [to quit the band] was due to [...] or [...] or [...] or [...] or a combination of the above". Think about this for a moment - a 536 page book about Madness and the author cannot explain one of the key - if not the key - events in the band's history. The problem here is that Reed did not actually speak to any of the members of the band while writing this book, instead relying on previously published interviews, the opinions of members of their entourage, and even album sleeve notes. What you end up with is a meticulous list of things that Madness did but without any real insight or understanding of why they did them. Shame really, as Reed displays an obvious fondness for the band and an eye for detail elsewhere. However, I've heard that Suggs' recently published autobiography does not delve too deeply into the workings of Madness, so this might be the best study of the Nutty Boys on the market. For the time being, anyway.

Good advice, but do as she says, not as she does

There are a lot of negative reviews about this book, throwing out the A Word [anorexia], and full of people making a big stink about how Bethanny advises people take just a few bites of food. But here's the thing: if you want to lose weight, you basically have to decide what you want to sacrifice - quality or quantity.

By that I mean you can either choose to eat lots/large quantities of food, but it has to be low-cal healthy stuff [veggies, air-popped popcorn, fat free dairy, lean protein, nothing fried/sweetened/fatty, etc.]. In this case, you're sacrificing quality - meaning you're limiting (or eliminating) richer, tastier foods in favor of getting to eat more. This plan is great for those who like to consume in bulk.

The other option is to sacrifice quantity [this is the route Bethanny seems to advocate], meaning you can eat whatever you want, but must stick to small portions. I've observed that this is actually how most of my thin friends eat/drink. I used be jealous because they appeared to be able to eat whatever they want (and they do), but the difference is they stop when they're full (what a CRAZY concept, right?) and they're never the ones to have that second piece of pizza/cake/fried chicken.

All that to say, you can moan and complain all you want about Bethanny's portion-minded way of indulging but I guarantee that you will never find a weight loss book that's going to tell you that you can eat whatever you want, as much as you want because it simply can't be done.

Getting back to the book itself . . .

Pros:

-Encourages you to indulge in the foods you want (in moderation). This is key. Deprevation almost ALWAYS backfires when it comes to weight loss/dieting. As I always say "Woman shall not live on rice cakes alone".

- Requires you to eat mindfully. Years of dieting can cause people to forget how to listen to their bodies. Getting re-familiar with hunger and fullness is important and can help you eat the proper amount of calories for YOUR body, as opposed to how much your friends/husband/kid/neighbor eats.

- Bethanny shows you a sample of what she eats in a given week/weeks. It's a good example of a balance of healthy foods and less healthy ones.

- There is freedom is not being on a "diet" and not having to cut out any food altogether.

Cons:

- For those of us who have struggled with our weight for years, and especially people like me who battle binge eating, the concept of having say, 3 bites of a brownie is almost laughable. After all, if we had the restraint and discipline to stop at a half a bagel, we probably woulnd't be heavy to begin with. I imagine leaving some (or most!) of your food on the plate is something that would require LOTS of practice.

- She oversimplfies the impact of emotional eating and throws out only one brief sentence about getting professional help if you binge eat. This is CRUCIAL because if you are not in a sound place emotionally and psychologcially, all the other advice in the book becomes a moot point. It's almost impossible to take a balanced approach to eating if you're a wreck on the inside.

- This was the biggie for me, and the main reason [I think] why people cry anorexia over this book: Bethanny's food journal. While it's a good mix of healthier foods and treat foods, she doesn't eat anywhere CLOSE to a healthy amount of calories for a grown woman. My three year old neice quite likely consumes more calories than Bethanny does. Now I'm sure being in the public eye means that Bethanny is under pressure to be a few sizes smaller than the average [healthy] woman because well, thin is in, and the camera adds ten pounds. But the average woman reading this book is likely not an aspiring reality star, model or actress and doesn't need to subsist on merely the amount of food that falls off the table at a small dinner party.

My advice/verdict/summary? Fill up on healthy food, top it off with a few bites of the more indulgent stuff, be active as much as your schedule allows, and seek help if your emotions are getting in the way of making better choices for your body.

It works! Very natural approach to eating...

I would have given it 5 stars, but this is a very poorly edited book and there are a lot of typos in it which really bug me.

If you can look past that, fundamentally this is an amazing approach to eating. I was surprised because I read a couple of convincing bad reviews and thought this book might promote eating disorders. But it doesn't do that at all. I've also read Skinny Bitch, and worried this was going to be extreme like that, but I was surprised it wasn't.

The great thing about this approach is that no food is off limits. If you want steak, you can have a few bites; if you want fries, have a few bites; if you want a bagel; scoop out some of the bread to lighten it. There's nothing outrageously wrong with this... it's far better than diets that tell you never to eat carbs, or never to eat red meat. And it doesn't mean you can never eat a whole portion of steak, you just have to balance it. This is much easier to incorporate into my life because it allows me to eat out, eat what everyone else is eating, and have less rules to worry about. I don't have to count calories, I don't have to skip carbs, I can go out and order a cocktail.

I've lost 12.5 lbs on this program, while eating what I want, not feeling deprived of things I'm craving. As an example I will share what I had yesterday: Breakfast was a homemade veggie omelet, chicken sausage, coffee with cream. I went out for lunch to a Mexican restaurant, ordered a 2 taco combo and requested salad in place of the rice and beans and ate 1 1/2 of the tacos and most of my salad. I also had a glass of pinot grigio and about 6 chips with salsa, because now I know just because there is a whole basket of chips on the table, doesn't mean I have to go to town on them. Dinner was a baked breaded fish filet and tomato slices. And for dessert, half a slice of fresh homemade brownie and a glass of champagne. To me, this works and just feels like a natural way to eat. Before reading this book, I would think tacos and brownies were off limits, and would consider them a cheat meal and when I cheated I would have the full taco dinner, with the rice and the beans and a full basket of chips and salsa. This program prevents me from overdoing it, but I can still go out to restaurants and eat normal things.

And for those complaining about the suggested portion sizes, unfortunately you can't expect to have a big slab of steak or a giant plate of pasta, and a huge slice of cheesecake whenever you want and still lose weight. It's just not possible. This is like every other diet book in telling you to eat healthful things like lean protein and veggies and good carbs. But where it differs is that it says to eat those things but if you feel like mac n cheese or fries, go ahead and have a few bites of that too. And it works, because your will power isn't tested, and having a few bites of unhealthy things isn't going to derail you.

BEST "DIET" BOOK I'VE EVER READ. Finished it 3 days ago, already lost 4 lbs!

I've lost 15 pounds since I wrote this review--in less than a month! And that's while eating real food--chocolate, BBQ, steak, ice cream etc.

The trick is to be aware of what you are eating. Take small, slow bites. Enjoy your food. If you are eating mindlessly, you are not paying attention. Don't eat while reading/watching TV/talking--you take bigger bites and eat more than you realize. I have lost this weight never going hungry--because it's all in how we eat. This has completely transformed how I look at what I eat.

ORIGINAL REVIEW:
Firstly: WOW. This book has given me an entirely new perspective about how and what I eat.

Let me preface this a bit by saying: I haven't read Part II of the book, which apparently helps you put into practice the Frankel's Ten Rules. I might go back and do so, but I wanted to leave a review ASAP for anyone pondering whether or not to get this book. GET IT FOR PART I, IF ANYTHING!

I'm a 41-year old woman who has about 30 extra pounds on her--gained from a still-uncontrolled thyroid issue. As a nationally certified trainer, I used to be very, very fit but, due to hypothyroid-related some heart problems, in the last two years I have not been able to workout to lose the weight I've gained. I ALSO have had, since I was young, a serious love-hate relationship with food. I tend to eat compulsively under stress, or mindlessly when with family, etc. In my "work out" days, my "food issues" caused me to develop anorexia athletica. Sometimes, I would binge. I've read so many other books on fitness and dieting--I have a large bookcase devoted just to these kinds of books.

So when I found this book, I didn't have much hope for it, but I thought, "What the heck." I began to read Part I and couldn't put it down! I've read Part I twice, and even took notes on what really struck a chord with me. This book, in four days, has completely changed the way I look at food. I sincerely never expected this. I've lost 4 pounds in three days--this, with my still-uncontrolled hypothyroid issues, is unheard of!

Some of the Ten Rules she gives are sort of redundant, but here are the ideas, in summary, that have primarily led to a complete revolution in my thinking about food:

1) She talks about "The Law of Diminishing Returns" when eating--especially something not necessarily good for you, but that you enjoy. Anyone familiar with economics understands what diminishing returns means in business, but with eating, it comes down to this: the first bite you eat will be phenomenal. But have you ever noticed after a few bites, much of the enjoyment is gone? THAT is when Frankel recommends you stop eating it. Why waste calories on something of which you aren't getting maximum enjoyment?

I have seen some comments here that state Frankel tells you to "eat only three bites and stop." To put it bluntly, that's not true. She states that for her, usually after three bites she notices she no longer enjoys something enough to finish eating it. She ALSO says that if you really never get to that point, then eat it if you want--you are in control. Just make up for your splurge somewhere else.

2) BALANCE your diet: she gives ideas for what you want to look for in meals if you've already had, say, high-carb or high-sugar items in your meal. She never tells you WHAT to eat, just how to balance your daily intake.

3) You don't have to clean your plate! I never realized how this impacted my thinking until I read this book. This, combined with the Law of Diminishing Returns has given me so much strength in being able to resist foods in quantities I'd otherwise eat them. For example, if hubby makes me a sandwich, I no longer feel like I have to eat the whole thing if I stop enjoying it after eating half. With this in mind, I've noticed I'm eating much less. I just offer the rest to my kids, and if they don't want it, the dogs get it.

4) ENJOY your food. Slow down and taste it. Really pay attention to the flavors. Savor it. Not only is it good for digestion, your body can tell you much sooner when you are full. Also, you'll notice that Law of Diminishing Returns kick in. I've used this law to great success: An example: I LOVE Starbursts. At night, if we have any, I'd probably have twenty of them after dinner before realizing what I'd done. Last night, I decided to bite them into small bites, suck on them and really just enjoy the taste. I had THREE, and shared the rest with my kids. I was so proud of myself!

Let me be clear: THIS IS NOT A DIET BOOK. This is a book about how to break free from your compulsion to eat, your unhealthy relationship with food, your self-sabotaging diet, etc. Frankel NEVER tells you what to eat in Part I (though she offers lots of great ideas in Part II, apparently). She doesn't chastise you for eating things you love--in fact, she encourages it. She just advises you slow down, follow the "rules" for eating,and be good to yourself. There is a lot of great, common sense information in Part I that, despite my fitness and nutrition background, I've never heard offered for those of us who want to change our relationships with food, eat healthier and either lose or maintain weight. I'm going to try it "my way" instead of doing Part II's example (especially since I have food allergies), but I might end up going back to it if my way doesn't work for me.

For me to lose 4 lbs in 3 days with NO exercise and uncontrolled hypothyroid is simply astounding. I haven't been able to do this even when I force myself not to eat. For anyone who wants to completely reform their relationship with food, you cannot go wrong with this book. It's the best $12 I've ever spent. I actually LOOK FORWARD to eating now--and not in that compulsive, binge-then-regret way. I am finally in control, not some obsession with food.

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!! More, Please!

I am very well acquainted with the BDSM lifestyle having been a part of it for years. This story was written by a man who clearly knows what he's talking about.

The main characters are absolutely compelling. Their journey together as well as individually is so well written I found myself pulled into their world and wanting to be a part of it. For the first half of the book, I had a love/hate relationship with Sgt Tate. Three quarters through and I fell in love with him. Dan is a remarkable young man. I'd love to spend time with him, as well.

I went through every emotion reading this book. Love, hate, lust, disgust, sadness, anger, joy. I laughed, I cried. There are 3 points in the story where I just completely teared up. The emotions this story conjures are very powerful. It was a very emotional roller coaster ride. If you don't tear up at least once, you have no soul.

Please, please write more...just nothing further in this story. For me, where the story ends is where it should stay. I would devour anything else. This book left me needing more. A truly fantastic read. Thank you SO much for this amazing story!

Wow. I cannot come to wrap my head around what I just read. I was expecting something different, way different. I was expecting an erotic story. What I got was an in depth study into these two men. That's not to say that it isn't sexual, it is. In fact the sexual escapades are sometimes extremely graphic. What surprised me most is how the sex and the story seamlessly intertwine with one another all while sustaining a high level of intensity. Wow again.

From a book standpoint, it is well crafted. There is a believable plot that continually builds; and the pacing feels right between the really intense parts to the quieter parts. There are surprises throughout. The characters are well thought out including the minor ones. If I had one complaint, it that the author could describe things in more detail; what is presented is minimal, but it keeps the movement flowing and it fits into a military feel.

From an erotica standpoint, it is well crafted as well. The sex is varied, so it doesn't feel like someone's fetish being described for hundred of pages. This is definitely sadomasochism. I felt at times that I was masochistic for liking some parts that should normally repulse me, but I kept reading.

I am so glad to have found a book that the author didn't dumb down the twisted aspect just to reach a wider audience.

I have never heard of Robert Zigmont, but I would love to read more of his work.

Okay this book surprised the hell out of me. I bought it on a recommendation of a friend. I was expecting just some erotica with lots of the usual fun. I got that plus a whole lot more that was way more satisfying and introspective. This is a very intimate look at two people and how they help each other to mature. The character development was just so brilliantly laid out. I wanted to know these people. There were emotional punches that I did not expect at all. All in all, one of the most satisfying reads of any genre that I have had in awhile.

An important, accessible book

I loved this book. There seems to be a trend of philosophy books lately that are returning to the roots of why philosophy matters, which is to show us that it was meant not just to teach us how to think, but also how to live. Samuelson's book does this and, what is even more remarkable, does it within the context of teaching an introduction to philosophy that is engaging both to students and teachers of philosophy alike. Samuelson not only discusses Plato, Descartes, and Kant, he shows how the great issues of philosophy have had an impact on his own life and the lives of his students. Samuelson must be a remarkable teacher and I cheered the fact that he spoke with such obvious respect for his students. The book itself is beautifully written, with each chapter presented as a more or less self-contained meditation on the larger theme. I didn't rush through it...didn't want to. Instead I savored each chapter and tried to limit myself to one a day, so that I could think about them.

This book reminded me most of Walden, where Thoreau engages us in his own reflections on how to live a meaningful life so that he can wake us up to the potential within our own. Samuelson does the same. By writing a book that is a meaningful reflection on how philosophy has influenced his life, Samuelson invites us to try it for ourselves.

On the second to last day of my philosophy class this semester I wrote the title of this book on the board and told my students that if the course had meant anything to them, they should buy it and use it as a springboard to continue their philosophical educations. Also, it just might change their life.

Therapy for Despondent Philosophy Majors

The title of "The Deepest Human Life" may sound pompous, but it is a phrase taken from William James. That's appropriate because the book aims to rehabilitate a conception of philosophy as a Socratic calling, or a spiritual discipline, rather than a technical academic subject. In particular, the author uses episodes from the lives of his students to show how philosophy can help us live and bring out the best features of our nature. He seems to have learned as much from them as they from him; one moving section explains how he was converted to the Kantian view that actions shouldn't be judged by their consequences. The writing is always clear, and sometimes lyrical.

I gave the book four stars only because a few of the discussions (of Stoicism, for example) have a potted Idiot's-Guide-to-Western-Philosophy feel to them. On the other hand, the section on the Sufi al-Ghazali, about whom I knew nothing before I read this book, was eye-opening. I'd recommend this book to all students who despair of the pedantry endemic in academic philosophy. It'll restore their faith. William James would have approved.

A Genuinely Funny, Heart-Felt, And Accessible introduction to Philosophy

Last night, I interrupted my wife several times from her show on Netflix to read her lines from this book, most of the time because they were hilarious, but sometimes because of their poignancy. This is just a wonderful book all the way around. Also, I found THE DEEPEST HUMAN LIFE to be a great reality check -- it made me think about what philosophy is really about or should be about (for the first time in a lot of years). The coverage of and insight into the philosophers (their lives and philosophies) is amazing -- just couldn't be better. This book hangs together, instructs, and compels in an amazing way.
