About the Author
E. David Cronon (1924–2006), was professor emeritus of history and dean emeritus of the College of Letters and Sciences at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He is author of numerous books and articles on twentieth-century American history, including Labor and the New Deal.

Decent book on Marcus Garvey.

This Marcus Garvey biography is very short and readable book. This book gives a basic understanding of Marcus Garvey and his Universal Negro Improvement Association. Most of the book is factual and informative and explains Garvey's accomplishments and downfalls. My only criticism is the author E David Cronon is very bias against Garvey. The author does not seem to be able to give an objective assessment of Marcus Garvey. Cronon does not take into account the hostility of the white power structure against Garvey's movement. I would not recommend this book for any Garvey supporter.

Very informative.

This gave an incredible amount of background about a man who is largely ignored in American history. It's sad really, because his grand plans although never realized are exactly what is needed in the black community. Fragments of his teachings have been used/borrowed in later movements, but there hasn't been anyone that had such an impact as he had. It's incredibly impressive when you consider the time period.
