We know it is the same in all books of FoG, but we like it anyway: Army lists beautifully detailed and lots of historical research. The period is a good one too. Italian wars and mercenaries, the begining of firearms, the earlier tercios and transicion from the knights to pikes, they are all there, in this supplement. Osprey knows we like warfare, FoG and that we will buy it, and even so they work hard to make a good book.

Guide to the Armies of the West 1494-1610

Very much a required book if you want to game through the Italian Wars or the struggles of Henry VIII as well as the early parts of the French Wars of Religion or the Eighty Years' War in the Low Countries, this books lists the armies for all of these conflicts complete with allies and optional campaigns. Some of them are of incredible complexity and range of types; the various later Spanish armies especially so. The book also includes lesser-knowns such as the Border Reivers and the troops of various peasant rebellions, as well as the North African states of the period. A very decent list of troops for the wars of western Europe in the 16th century.

Unfortunately a must

Unfortunatley it is a must as a companion to the Field of Glory Renaissance rule set (which are pretty good) if you want the army lists for Western European armies 1494-1610. Would have liked to have seen better explanations of how to use the lists as well as some rule clarifiactions for the unique formations and units of the era covered in this book. More attention should have been paid to the major powers/players of the time (ex. more space devoted to peasant revolt armies than the Swiss). Lots of eye candy from other Osprey uniform books, which is nice, but could have used more meat (especially for the price).
