Part memoir, part inspirational tract and part handbook for beginning teachers, Clark's treatise on how to get children excited about learning lays out some underlying principles of teaching, covering 11 fundamentals: enthusiasm, adventure, creativity, reflection, balance, compassion, confidence, humor, common sense, appreciation and resilience. (This analysis follows Clark's bestselling The Essential 55.) Clark, who was named Disney Teacher of the Year in 2001, shares some of his own blunders and many of his successes while learning to teach, many of which may help new teachers trying to figure out the basics. In a rambling style, Clark relays anecdote after anecdote, as he weaves back and forth from his life as a teacher to his childhood and more advice for teachers, including such details as how to write notes home to parents about field trips. There isn't much depth here, and the book doesn't analyze the nitty-gritty of Clark's own teaching methods or of educational ideas. Indeed, it's more a motivational speech than an educational text, and it isn't hard to imagine Clark speaking these words aloud. However, the book does include some valuable nuggets on how to build children's confidence, help them remember information and teach them to be compassionate, advice that all teachers—but especially inexperienced ones—will find valuable and thought provoking.

About the Author
Ron Clark has been a teacher since 1995 and has taught in the most difficult schools in North Carolina and Harlem. Since winning Disney's 2001 Teacher of the Year, he has spoken across the country to teachers, school boards and PTAs to share his 55 Rules. He lives in Atlanta.

Very Good Resource

The Excellent 11 is a wonderful resource for teachers and parents. While it seems like a low-budget sequel to The Essential 55, it does have several nuggets of information that are beneficial to the reader. I especially like the anecdotes about his experiences. It is a truly inspiring book. Ron Clark's writing style is homey and comfortable for all types of readers.
That said, it is an easy read and enjoyable. As a teacher, I look for ideas to incorporate into the classroom (high school) to make the students more responsive, resonsible, and interested in their individual education. Mr. Clark is full of ideas that work. So often teachers are given the idea du jour, which ends up be a recycled fad from the past that didn't work then and won't work now.
I highly recommend this book for all teachers (and parents) that are interested in educating children.

Very Practical Book

This book is packed full of good ideas when working with children, whether as a parent, a teacher, or a friend. Mr. Clark's enthusiasm inspires, but he is also very practical. I would have enjoyed having him as a teacher.
