Excellent
By George Hariton
This is the fourth editionn of a standard case-book on European Union competition law. It is written very clearly and the material is organized logically and is easy to follow. The extracts from leading cases are especially helpful, being to the point, yet not too long, a danger with European decisions that sometimes meander. The book is encyclopedic, covering nearly every aspect of a complex body of law, but it is easy to use it to familiarize yourself with specific topics.
EU competition law differs in significant ways from U.S. antitrust law, and the contrast can be very helpful helpful to students on either side of the Atlantic. For example, the Europeans spend a significant amount of time considering vertical restraints, a subject that receives much less attention in the U.S. As well, the use of rules of reason (as opposed to per se rules) differs. Finally, European law, by necessity, is much more sensitive to federalism (overlapping jurisdictions) when it comes to multiple jurisdictions cooperating (or not) in implementation and enforcement.
There are other books on European competition law, e.g. by Richard Whist and by Maher Dabbah (my teacher). But for sheer insight and comprehensiveness, Jones and Sufrin is far and away the best.
